Jahmyr Gibbs: I really don’t care that people think Lions drafted me too early

USA Today Sports

The Lions raised some eyebrows last month when they drafted running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th overall pick.

Gibbs was a productive player at Alabama, but teams have gone away from using high draft picks on running backs in recent years and few predicted Gibbs would buck that trend before the Lions handed in their pick. That led to some criticism of the team’s decision-making process, but Gibbs said he was not paying any mind to those who felt that way.

“Everybody’s entitled to their opinion, I really don’t care,” Gibbs said, via Bob Wojnowski of the Detroit News. “It feels great to be a part of something special. Going up, moving forward, it’ll be fun to watch.”

Gibbs didn’t practice on Saturday because of an ankle injury, but there’s no thought that it’s a serious issue for the rookie. The Lions will be hoping that no other aches and pains get in the way of Gibbs’ ascent to a major role in their offense.

  1. They all say the same thing every time they’re even remotely criticized. At least he didn’t call them haters or complain about not getting respect.

  2. If I was in his position I wouldn’t care either. I’d be ecstatic to be drafted number 12.
He is set for life, Even if he’s a bust.
A hall of famer RB drafted in the later rounds will be hard pressed to earn as much as he will earn

  3. The Lions were poised to ascend to the pinnacle of the NFC North this season, but then the draft came.

  4. So you say you don’t care what people say…and then you tell the media you don’t care. That means you care…way to much what other people say.
Gibbs was overdrafted and will probably struggle to say healthy. Good luck Motor City Kitties fans.

  5. Gibbs will be a good NFL player. A gamebreaker. A talent. But, you can’t pick offensive skilled guys that early. You can score points if you have a good QB, and the Lions have a good QB. But, if you don’t have a shut down defense, the other team can outscore you. You can create offense, but you need studs on defense. The defensive studs usually go early. Just basic fundamentals that teams don’t understand. You wonder why coaches and GM’s get fired at an alarming rate. This is why. Pro sports is probably the only business where the owners know very little about their product. The average football fan probably knows more about football than half the owners, and these are the guys hiring and firing. At least coaches get guaranteed contracts.

  6. Vegas has the Lions favored in 12 of 17 games, including EVERY home game. The league believes in them to the point that they put them in primetime for five games, including the season opener. But, I’m sure you keyboard warriors know better and they’ll be bad : )

Bookmark this comment, the Lions will come out and make a statement against Kansas City!

No need to bookmark anything, we have 67 years of Lions failure to back up that comment. L0Lions!

  8. By far the worst draft of all the other team in the NFL. No one cares what Vegas has or what Goff’s fluke stats were last year. The Lions still suck.

    00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Ya no kidding! I honestly thought the Lions were heading in the right direction until the gambling scandals and then that awful draft. They better fix that locker room before they lose another key player.

  10. The Lions had an opportunity to grab a potential game changing offensive weapon, and they took it – in part because they had a little extra house money to play with thanks to the Stafford trade with the Rams. If this back turns out to be a stud, it’s going to force defenses to choose between loading the box to stop the run – which may add a bit of stress to the pass defense, or play it straight and let this kid run to daylight behind this talented offensive line. And so what if the crowd says never draft a back this high – he may not have been available the next time the Lions picked – so, to heck with what the crowd says – let them pound sand. As a Packer fan, I’m not looking forward to playing the Lions this season – but I might be looking to add Gibbs to my fantasy team.

  11. If he was picked in round 2 they would be screaming great pick…but bottom line is if he plays to his potential nobody will remember where he was picked

  12. People don’t see the potential with Gibbs. Big picture Jamo st brown Gibbs laporta and Montgomery as a bell cow back. This is some serious offense explosion. Some are like swift was better. Gibbs is a faster player with less wear on his body. Realistically if he rushes for 400 to 500 yards or more and catches 60 to 70 passes with 600 to 700 plus yards that production trumps swift all day! So with Gibbs let the season play out before judging. Montgomery has a unique situation he rushes for 1100 to 1400 yards that’s more production than we got out of Williams. When jamo comes back this offense will be lights out!

Doesn’t matter what round he was picked in and it doesn’t matter what was screamed. The Lions had one of the worst drafts in the NFL this year. Of course we (lions fans) all want them to work out, but our track record of drafting has been awful and this feels even worse than it usually does the past 7 decades.

I’m sure he going to be as successful as previous top skill position picks for the Lions like… Kerryon Johnson, D’Andre Swift, Jahvid Best, Ameer Abdullah, Mikel Leshoure, Brandon Pettigrew, Roy Williams, Mike Williams, Eric Ebron, Charles Rorgers, Titus Young and Ryan Broyles

  14. As a Bears fan, I wish we had the Lions draft. We drafted sub par talent throughout the draft. We are going to be the worst team again.

Bears had one of the best drafts in the league, they will be 8-9 if I had to make a bet. The Lions might have a better record, but they definitely had poor grades all around in this draft and most definitely had a worse draft than the Bears. It’s not even close.

  16. When Gibbs puts up 1K rushing and 1K receiving, everyone is going to wish their team had drafted this guy. He has elite speed and play making ability. I wish the Bears would have drafted him instead of an avg at best RT drafted for need, not talent.

  17. I really can’t get my head around all these people saying that the lions draft was awful. Honestly, only reason people are saying that is because they didn’t mesh with whatever so-called experts mock draft was.

The only real argument someone could make is against some of the pics at their location being against some perceived positional value, that being said, If somebody had been in a dark room and had no idea about the draft right now and where players were taken and I said that with their first five picks the Lions came away with Gibbs, Jack Campbell, Brian Branch, Sam laporta, and hendon hooker but didn’t tell you where they were taken at most people would have said wow. That’s a pretty good draft.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but at the end of the day if players end up being good no one is going to care where they were drafted at. Looking back a few years down the line.

  18. I’m sure Matt Millen had a couple A drafts maybe more than two
