Who are the NFLPA executive director candidates?

The NFL Players Association is moving closer to selecting a new executive director. It’s unclear how close anyone is to knowing who the candidates are.

The union hasn’t identified the finalists who will be considered when the board of player representatives gather next month, ostensibly to select a new executive director.

Earlier this year, Daniel Kaplan of TheAthletic.com identified several candidates: former NFL quarterback Matt Schaub, Hall of Fame tight end Kellen Winslow Sr., NFLPA chief operating officer Teri Patterson Smith, NFLPA senior director of player affairs Don Davis, NFLPA assistant director of external affairs George Atallah, and former NFLPA president Dominique Foxworth. Some quietly disputed Kaplan’s list at the time, but no one replaced it with a different list.

Earlier this month, Jim Trotter of TheAthletic.com reported that “each of the internal candidates to be the NFLPA’s next executive director did not make the cut to finalists.” That would eliminate Smith, Davis, and Atallah.

We’ve heard a few scattered things since then, but nothing concrete. Foxworth is not believed to be a finalist. Some wonder whether former NFL receiver and former member of Congress Anthony Gonzalez is. His name first surfaced when the union decided to current executive director DeMaurice Smith for a final term.

On one hand, the NFLPA has every right to proceed with confidentiality. On the other hand, a complete lack of transparency creates suspicion as to what’s truly happening.

However it goes, it seems to be going in the direction of a new executive director, sooner than later.

It’s a thankless job. Players like Tom Brady will complain whenever they want. But stars like Brady also won’t take true and sustained leadership on union matters — and few players are willing to give up their ability to play and to get paid for regular-season games in order to pursue the greater good.

With the nuclear option never on the table, it’s not easy to get the best possible deal when negotiating with owners who won’t hesitate to take their superyachts for extended cruises in lieu of playing a season full of football games, if that’s what it takes to shatter the union’s resolve.

  1. Unfortunately, it simply won’t matter. This is the weakest player union in professional sports vs. the most business savvy ownership group in professional sports. It will always be a one sided affair.

  2. It’s a true relief to not see Troy Vincent’s name listed among the candidates. For real, that’s all i came here to say is Troy Vincent is unworthy of recognition and im glad to see his name not listed here

  3. Let’s face it, the many people here who criticize the NFLPA as ineffective actually want it to fail. Whenever you hear someone talking about “millionaire players” you know that person cares nothing about player rights or safety.

  4. Why should star players like Tom Brady lead the NFL PA?
Their goals are not the same as the goals of most of the players.
They would be terrible for the vast majority of membership

  5. The owners are going to miss DeMaurice Smith.

Brady or a star player would be a poor choice. Their goals are for themselves, not the union.

  6. They should get Jon Gruden, Brian Flores, or even Dan Snyder to lead the NFLPA. Talk about a guys with a serious bone to pick with the NFL.

If you can’t take the nuclear option, at least thake the nuclear director.

Troy Vincent works for the enemy of the NFLPA. That would have been a very strange choice.

That’s exactly the way you like it, isn’t it? People like you hate the players while you slobber all over the billionaire owners. By the way, several of those owners are second generation or more wealthy, they’ve never been involved in business in their lives.

Perhaps they realize that having an exceptionally good ability to throw a football or tackle a runner does not mean they are even minimally qualified to direct a union with a $7 billion annual payroll, let alone be good at it. I can’t fault them for having some self-awareness.

I might go the opposite direction on this one. Troy knows where all the bodies are buried and he knows about the corrupt internal practices of the NFL. He might know the things that really worry the owners.

Mike was not saying that Brady should be the Executive Director. Rather, he was saying that Brady should be a leader in supporting the union instead speaking against it.

  12. I don’t think there should be any unions. We live in a free market economy, choose to work for the minimum 750k + benefits or don’t sign the contract. Or find a less risky line of work. Choice is yours.
