Will Aaron Rodgers cut the Jets a financial break?

Before the Packers traded quarterback Aaron Rodgers, he agreed to move his fully-guaranteed $58.3 million option bonus to 2024, as a final cap favor to his former team. Now that he’s at the minimum salary of $1.165 million for 2023 with $107.55 million fully guaranteed on the books for 2024, Rodgers and the Jets need to work out a new deal.

Jets G.M. Joe Douglas said last week during an appearance on #PFTPM that the two sides are currently working on it. The manner in which the money is split between the next two years could shed considerable light on whether he plans to stay with the team for one season or two.

But there’s another wrinkle to consider, one that might not make his agents particularly happy. Rodgers could decide to cut the Jets a break, reducing the total dollars due and owing over the next two years, in lieu of simply moving money around.

It would be his call, even if his agents oppose it. And it would go a long way toward getting him even deeper in the good graces of Gang Green, who will love him unconditionally unless and until adversity arrives and he fails to overcome it in more than two or three straight games.

  1. Hope this headline was meant to be funny because as we read it, Rodgers is laughing all the way to the bank.

  2. Wouldn’t that be the ultimate poke in the eye to the Packers? “Hey look…I gave THEM a discount.” Yeah…sounds like something Rodgers would do.

  3. Is this really a serious question?

If anything he’s going to want more money next season to come back.

  4. Seems to me that would be something worked out BEFORE the trade. Not sure why Rodgers would do the Packers a favor- they rarely did him any. But, the Jets? Stupid. They overpaid with picks and now will overpay salary and/or bonus.

  5. I don’t see Rodgers helping out any team without a financial benefit for himself. It’s a business and Rodgers prefers financial rewards and personal glory more than legacy and them achievement.

Rodgers wants money and MVPs as bad as Brady wanted Super Bowls. Nothing wrong with that but that’s who he is.

  6. Are you seriously suggesting he volunteer to take a pay cut of guaranteed money?

  7. What a mess. Rodgers is playing the jets, he’s gonna cash out then roll out after one season.

  8. “But there’s another wrinkle to consider, one that might not make his agents particularly happy.”

    ——————————

Lamar Jackson just patted himself on the back and put on dark sunglasses!

  9. Take a paycut Aaron. Favre get help you get some speaker arrangements in Mississippi to make up for it.

  10. And who knows, Aaron may even decide to pay them for the privilege of playing in New Jersey.

  11. He has leverage here so of course he won’t and he shouldn’t. The Jets will probably end up pushing money out past this playing time.

  12. If Rodgers wants another SB ring he should lower his salary to league minimum for the next two years. Then the team should trade their 1st/2nd depending on Rodgers playing time to the Packers for Bahktiari. Bahk should also agree to play for minimum.

  13. The Jets traded for Rodgers knowing this?  Until now I thought this was a reasonably even trade.  Now it’s a walk off grand slam win for the Packers.  Not even close.  Jets fans need to find a new team to root for.

  14. This was more fun when he was with the Packers, because they deserved each other.

  15. Rodgers is already gonna be around in this offseason more than with the packers in the last couple of years. Seems like he wants to stick it to GB. I wouldn’t be surprised if he cuts the jets a little break as part of the stick it to GB strategy.

And if he was playing in the NFC, I’d be all for it. Since he’s with the jets, make them pay upfront and structure the deal in a way that guarantees you retire next year.

  16. Jets knew the price and made the trade. Expecting Rodgers to give a discount and win them a Superbowl is ridiculous at this point. At best , expect Rodgers to continue to get paid even when he is no longer on the team . Trade Quinnen Williams to Detroit for Jamison Williams and hope Rodgers puts up 50 points a game .

  17. Hello no, snd why should he ?
The Jets went after him like some love sick teenager. Roger’s will be the same narcissistic playwr that he was in Green Bay.

  18. He had no problem screwing the Packers and his fellow teammates on the cap for his own self interests. Going forward, what would make anyone think that Aaron Rodgers isn’t about Aaron Rodgers? He is self absorbed to the point that he has convinced himself that he is on the cutting edge of players vs owners rights. He is, as long as it’s quarterbacks in the top ten, and everyone else can fend for themselves after we get ours.

  19. This is a joke question, right? Why would Rodgers give up money that is rightfully his? Would you? I’m not thinking so.

  20. The money aspect of the Rodgers/Jets relationship would have been discussed and agreed to as part of the final agreement between GB and NY on the trade compensation.

Unless the Jets are totally incompetent. You tell me.

  21. Will Aaron Rodgers ever do anything for someone other than himself? Ummmm no.

  22. He’s already loved by the Jets fans unconditionally. Have you seen their recent QBs?

  23. Not a chance. They will spread the Cap pain over the coming years and poison their remainder of the decade. What a cluster of a situation by a terrible owner and GM. Jets fans are going to be a laughing stock and deserve better

  24. I wouldn’t give anything away to the Jets. They put themselves in this position by picking up that horrible contract. It’s easy to say “oh just give them a break and take less money”. That’s easy for someone else to say because IT’S NOT THEIR MONEY ! They wanted Rodgers and they got him and now they have no choice but to be “all in” with him and that means paying him.

  25. Why would he do that? He milked the Packers for every dollar and then wondered why they couldn’t sign anybody to help him. Thinking the Packer fans would ask themselves “what the hell” .. he wouldn’t do that for us but will for the Jets. Just don’t think it will happen.

  26. The odds of Rodgers not taking money he is contractually owed is extremely low.

  27. Normally Florio advocates for a player to fleece a team as much as possible. For some reason, Florio now wants Rodgers to ‘give the Jets a break’? I usually side with the team but in this case, IMO, Rodgers should take as much of the Jets salary cap space as possible. YOLO right so get as much as you can Aaron!

  28. I’m surprised Rodgers re-did his contract with the Packers before the trade was consummated. Seems out of character for him, in my view. I thought he’d want to leave his cap space calling card on them.

Now that he did that, though, it wouldn’t make sense for him to NOT re-jigger his contract with the Jets, although it seemed that in Green Bay he was perfectly content soaking up cap space and then complaining about not having adequate weapons at his disposal. It’s odd, too, that he now has the inadequate weapons from Green Bay at his disposal in NY. This is kind of FUBAR.

  29. I’ll go with no. They knew the price tag, he’ll hold them to it.

  31. I dont root for many teams to lose, and I can feel the NYJ fans’ pain for the years of bumbling they have been subject to….but…but….if only for more and more interesting stories and drama…i kinda hope they lose a bunch of games…only for the circus it will unleash. Sorry jets fans…

  32. Lol…Why would Rodgers? He certainly didn’t adjust his contract in Green Bay at anytime to accommodate the teams salary cap.

  33. He’s guaranteed $107M for the ’24 season alone, the final year of that deal, and we’re speculating that he’ll somehow give the Jets a break when he’s never done so previously in his career?

First, no. Second, HELL no. Only thing he may do is agree to some void years to spread out the impact, but he is going to collect $107M in cash from the Jets next season regardless of how they try to improve the cap impact with dummy years in an extension.

  34. This one goes out to anybody that said the Jets had leverage…..

  35. He milked the Packers for every dollar and then wondered why they couldn’t sign anybody to help him.

The Packers brought the last 2 contracts to the table. Both were eyebrow raising.

The first, Rodgers was coming off shoulder reconstruction. The second, they had just tried to trade him. Very bizarre circumstances to load the Brinks truck up.

It worked out for them. His caps were very manageable, up until this season when they traded him.

… but of course, the narrative will continue that Rodgers forced the issue here.

  36. When Douglas acted ignorant about having to re-negotiate Rodger’s franchise crippling contract you Jet’s fans got that sick feeling in your stomachs knowing this is gonna turn out very bad.

  37. “he should lower his salary to league minimum for the next two years”
Pretty silly thinking, that is pretty much the opposite of the American Way. He has the contract he does because of his talent, hard work and performance. He is the definition of self made. Meanwhile the Jets in the biggest sports market in the world are the King of Self Inflicted Injury despite the league making every effort to get them out of the basement. You have to be a special kind of “special” to give away something so hard earned, especially to such a wasteful and unappreciative partner.

  38. At least my Pats won’t need to worry about paying a high amount for a franchise QB anytime soon. They would first need to identify one

  39. What I’d propose if I were Aaron

    4 year deal that’s really 3 years + a voidable 4th year.

2023: minimum salary + signing bonus.

2024: regular salary + portion of signing bonus. This is the last cash he’ll make. Jets will have to extend a few guys to make the cap work, but they can eat a hit here and make one more run.

2025: retired but on the books for 40 million dead cap from the bonus/Packers money

2026: year voids, stick the last 30-40 million dead cap here

  40. Do what the Patriots did.

Have Woody send Rodgers the money through a shill corporation.

  41. “he should lower his salary to league minimum for the next two years”

    Its basically already there;

    2023 – $1,165,000
    2024 – $2,250,000

Imagine being a grown man in your 60s as a pure bandwagoner, moping around as if your life revolves around needing your team to immediately find a HOF qb to replace the last.

    Just mortifying.

  43. If things go sideways in NY, and they generally do, the environment will be unbearable. At that point, while being absolutely roasted by the media and fans in NY, Aaron will realize that giving up the money….his compensation for withstanding it, will have been a huyuuuge mistake.

  44. Jets were dumb for going all in on Rodgers to start with. Now they are getting HAMMERED on the salary cap. They had Packers cornered and didn’t even request GB eats some of this hit.

  45. Even if he wanted to do it, the NFLPA would almost certainly not allow it since the contract is already signed. They always freaked out about Brady taking less $$$, but couldn’t do anything about it because the deal hadn’t been signed. This one, the PA can prevent from happening and almost certainly would, because of the precedent it would set…
Rodgers will re-do his deal and push some money out one way or another so the Jets will be taking cap hits long after he’s retired.

  46. Rodgers has never been that sort of guy and he’s been very upfront about that. He’s repeatedly said he dislikes the salary cap because it keeps his earnings below where he thinks they should be.

  47. Why would any NFL player offer to give money back? Because of the gentle, respectful and considerate way the league treats it’s players? Spare me.

  48. Even if he wanted to do it, the NFLPA would almost certainly not allow it since the contract is already signed.

$58mil is in the form of an option.

What power does the NFLPA have if that option is refused?

  49. Why anyone needs all this money is just selfish and nuts. Take $10M and let the Jets use all the rest to get you better teammates. Spread the wealth. I never understand all these greedy NFL quarterbacks. Just because the market allows these absurd salaries doesn’t mean you have to take it all. It’s pretty sad how this gets worse every year…smh

  50. Rodgers is $108 Million FULLY GUARANTEED. Why in the world would he take a penny less? Have we EVER seen Rodgers take a cut to help his team?

  51. Why would he? If we’ve learned anything about Aaron in the last couple of years, it’s that Aaron looks out for Aaron.

  52. purpleguy says:

He might, since he actually respects the Jets management.
    ++++++
Well if true, he’s in the minority. I mean Douglas basically admitted he said “as long as you don’t make this year’s cap number go up do what you want” and Rodgers and Green Bay removed $14 million of obligation from Green Bay and transferred it to the Jets. Respect?

  53. They’ll figure out a way to move it around, but Aaron will get every penny.

  54. So if I understand this right Rodgers is guaranteed 107 million next yr?

  55. As a life long Packer fan, I felt it was time for Aaron to move on from Green Bay. He was disinterested and injured last year. I have no doubt he could take the Jets all the way to the Super Bowl. As far as what he gets paid, for what Hertz, Watson & Jackson are making, he’s worth every penny.

  56. $58mil is in the form of an option.

What power does the NFLPA have if that option is refused?

    =====================================

It’s a Roster bonus, not an option. It’s tied to his presence on a roster as of the first day of the 2023 league year (already met). He only delayed the timing of the payout. It’s earned and guaranteed. He will receive $107M in cash from the Jets in 2024, and $58M even if he decides he doesn’t want to play next season.

  57. Forgotten in all of this is the fact ownership has zero respect or loyalty to most players under contract because all they care about is lining their respective pockets. No player should give back anything monetarily unless there’s a benefits to himself. (Brady was famous for restructuring to allow players to be signed)

  58. A-Rod will be the Bobby Bonilla of the NFL. He will be getting a check from the Jets at the same time as he is drawing his Social Security!!!
