Ja'Marr Chase didn’t struggle to come up with an answer for a question about his goals for the 2023 season.

Chase set the Bengals franchise record for single-season receiving yards with 1,455 yards during his rookie season and he posted another strong year in 2022. For his third year in the league, Chase wants to rewrite the rest of the Bengals record book.

“Cincinnati stuff. Stuff to have my name written around this whole facility,” Chase said, via the team’s website. “Every receiver record they have.”

T.J. Houshmandzadeh set the receptions record with 112 catches in 2007 and Carl Pickens caught 17 touchdowns in 1995. If Chase claims either or both of those records, chances are good that the Bengals will be extending their playoff run to a third straight year.

  1. Not a Bengals fan, but if I was I would hope his answer on goals would have been to win a Superbowl. Instead, he focused on individual stats. Another potential diva receiver.

  2. Word of advice – always mention team objectives. E.g. he could have said “set every team record on our way to a Super Bowl”.

Cuz now it’s guaranteed he’ll get the “me first” label

  3. Chase has a chance to be this generation’s Rice. He can play every receiver spot, catchem’ deep, run after the catch, he can block, break tackles, etc. Not saying he will get close to any of Rice’s records, but he could be the most complete receiver of his generation. Breaking team records would be a great career, and I know that he can’t control it on his own, but winning the Super Bowl would make him immortal for the Bengals.

  4. Lofty goals, as they should be,from this elite talent. Those results, in conjunction with all the other Bengal’s offensive firepower, may well have the team playing in February. Go WR1, Go Bayou Tigers, Go Bengals!!!

  5. That man has a really good shot, but even better shot of winning a SB which is the goal after all. If they can keep the core dudes there in Cincy with Joe Burrr they will be contenders for a few more years easily. It will all depend on the ownership — notoriously cheap — to keep the squad together.

  6. Right…because personal records are what it’s all about, right Ja’Marr?

The Bengals won’t be able to pay Burrow, Higgins, and Chase. Their RB room aint what it used to be; and their SB defense was great, but it was cobbled together with free agents and castoffs.

This Bengals thing is about to go off a cliff.

  7. Chase is a great team player. Been nothing less then phenomenal on and off the field. Shows up early and leaves late while most players skip these workouts. All the stars are in town for the workouts. What youre lookin at is the next dynasty in the NFL.

  8. I’ve had this guy on my fantasy team each of the last two seasons & it’s worked out quite well. Sounds like I’m gonna have to try to draft him yet again.

  9. So many idiots in the comments I swear. Dude was asked his personal goals and he states he wants to own team records but apparently him answering a question candidly is “diva” attitude or selfish lol. You want your players to want to be the best that’s ever played for the franchise. Bengals have had a bunch of studs at WR throughout their history despite the relative lack of success as a franchise. Isaac Curtis, Cris Collinsworth, Tim McGee, Carl Pickens, Ocho Cinco, AJ Green, now JaMarr

Off a cliff you say? Exactly what many posters said about the Chiefs last year and also what many are saying about the Eagles with Hurts’ new contract. The reality is that if you’re fortunate enough to have a truly elite QB you pay them what you have to pay them and you build a team around them. Having the elite QB will always keep you in contention and away from the “cliff’s edge”.
For those that like to argue, I said “elite” QBs. I’m not talking about paying QB wannabe stars like Kyler Murray or Dak or Lamar or Cousins or Watson or Wilson or many others big money. Be careful who you’re paying the big money to – this coming from a Cowboys fan.

  11. Obviously The goofball commenters read up into the very last sentence, which actually goes without saying. If Jamar does well, The Bengals do well. Goes hand in hand. Plus as the previous commenter states he was asked about personal goals.

  12. Chase is definitely the first player to ever set goals for himself before the season. Definitely a diva move…Except I think maybe just about every receiver, RB, and TE posts their goals in their locker in training camp, but that doesn’t fit the narrative. No reason to set measurable goals for yourself.

  13. Team records do t really hold much weight anymore due to the fact of players playing more games per season unless it’s a per average game record. That would be impressive with bengals having great receivers in multiple generations like Ike Curtis, Chris Collinsworth, Carl Pickens, Chad Johnson. Just some great players in their day.

  14. I’m not a Bengals fan but the comments on here bashing Chase for his PERSONAL goals is ridiculous. Winning the Super Bowl is a team goal and if Chase can grab 107+ catches and 17+ td’s that will definitely help Cincinnati reach their goal.

  15. You can set your clocks to the negative comments on every Bengals article from Steelers, Ravens, and Chiefs fans. Cracks me up how much rent free space y’all give the Bengals!

KC fan chiming in here. I see nothing wrong with what Chase said about his personal goals for the year. He goes off and gets those records then we can start planning another AFCCG rematch.
I laugh at the commenters every time Mahomes is mentioned because the hate comes out. Always the commenters that bring up Mahomes’ brother thinking they are the smartest guy in the room.

  17. *He can play every receiver spot, catchem’ deep, run after the catch, he can block, break tackles, etc.*

Ja’Maar and Joe have a Vulcan mind meld thing going on. Great to watch these guys in action. I hope (1st) the Bengals win a Super Bowl and (2nd) Ja’Maar achieves his goals.

  18. I hope that when Chase retires, we can all remember him forever as the greatest Bengal wide receiver to have ever played in Cincinnati.

With zero SB wins and rings – to display with the rest of his personal achievement trophies. He can take over the lamenting throne from Tony Gonzalez.

  19. Press people have learned that Ja’Marr Chase is going to give a direct answer in response to whatever question he is asked. Early on he was asked about the difference catching a thrown ball in the pros, and he pointed out the different striping on the ball, which is 100% true. All of a sudden people were accusing him of making excuses, he can’t catch so he’s blaming the ball, yada. So now he’s asked about his personal goals and he gives a direct answer. He wants to rewrite the Bengals’ record book. And that makes him a “me-first” guy? He didn’t say he wanted to to break LEAGUE records, he said he wanted to break TEAM records. He’s a Bengal, and he’s answering as one, period. Anyone who has seen him make a textbook block downfield for a ballcarrier knows where his heart is. If I were his coach, his teammate, his dad, I’d be proud as hell. The rest of you can pound sand.
