Why haven’t the Vikings released Dalvin Cook?

It’s been obvious for weeks that it’s just a matter of time before running back Dalvin Cook is no longer a Viking. So why is Cook still a Viking?

It’s a strange situation. The Vikings don’t want to pay Cook $10.4 million this year. They’d clearly like to trade him. They have yet to find a trade partner.

It seems unlikely that they will. No one will be assuming Cook’s salary. A new team would want him to re-do the deal. Why would Cook re-do the deal when he can just hold firm and be released?

The Vikings have two problems, if/when they cut him. First, who will replace him? Alexander Mattison is solid, but he’s not a home-run hitter. They currently don’t have someone who can do what Cook does. Second, they risk looking foolish if/when he goes somewhere else and has a solid season. Casual fans won’t understand the subtleties and nuances of not paying Cook that much money, even though he still has gas in the tank.

The Vikings would prefer to re-direct that cash to someone like Justin Jefferson. And the Vikings understand the risk of having that much cash invested in a position that results in plenty of injuries.

Regardless, it seems to be coming. Cook has been removed from the team’s Twitter head, replaced by Alexander Mattison. That wasn’t an accident.

The question becomes where will Cook land? He has $2 million in fully-guaranteed salary, subject to offset. The sooner he’s cut, the more likely he makes more than that this year elsewhere.

On Friday, the Vikings finally did a face-saving trade for Za'Darius Smith. They surely would love to do the same thing with Cook. It won’t be as easy, and at this point it seems not likely.

  1. I’m not sure why they haven’t let him go, but I think the money saved will go to a defender.

  2. Does a June 1st release type of thing play into it? Maybe that’s part of the reason for the Vikings to be sitting on him. Or maybe they just want to play “hardball” with him.

  3. Answer: The Vikings are trying to work with a team and Cook to facilitate a trade. The Vikings are not in need of salary cap space at the moment so there isn’t urgency. If the Vikings choose to release Cook, they can do so post June 1st. But if the Vikings can find a trade partner, it saves them $2 million in salary cap.

  4. I’ll continue to say it on every one of these stories. Rams will sign him. It’s the same offense with the guy who taught the Viking coach what he knows. It allows Akers to split the carries as he should to be in his best role. Others keep bringing up the Dolphins, but he’s never played in that jump cut Shanahan zone system, and McDaniel already addressed the position in the draft with Achane along with FA signings. Vikings are just being petty because he won’t take a pay cut, but it’ll be their loss in roughly two weeks.

  5. I know he gets injured a lot, but the healthy version is pretty special. I’m confused why they want to get rid of cooks.

  6. The Vikings under Kevin Connelly are now a full time passing team…they don’t need a superstar RB. They’ll grab a few as the months go on and might even trade a low puck for someone in the outs on another team.

  7. At this point the only thing the Vikings could do to save face is to trade Cook for Patrick Mahomes.

  8. jonathankrobinson424,

The whole McVay system is predicated on having a strong RB. They just don’t want to pay an extension that they didn’t give out and think Madison will be adequate. Simple as that.

  9. Yep, everyone thinks he makes too much, despite having more TDs and only 300 less total yards than Jefferson …

  10. A team that really needs him doesn’t come to mind. Many would love having him I’m sure but not many need him.

  11. The classy thing would have been to release him. But this is the Vikings.

  12. Because there’s no reason to release him. It’s May. Maybe if someone they value more gets cut, they cut Cook to open up funds to sign them. But cutting him now to save money you can’t spend is pointless.

  13. I am surprised Cook has stayed this quiet. It’s beyond unfair to release him in June.

You can designate him a June 1st cut and still release him before hand, the team just can’t use the money til June 1st.

This is spiteful. Where are the righteous old timers who always say players should honor their contracts even when teams do business like this. None of them want to chime in when it doesn’t fit their narrative.

Dalvin needs to blow up their spot on social media. He’s been way too classy here.

  14. Tell us you want to be a pass-first team without telling us you want to be a pass-first team.

With Cousins under center. Good luck with that.

  15. Let’s let the professionals make the decisions. Then everyone can write about them and how they were wrong, somehow.

  16. Nobody’s going to trade for Cook knowing he’s going be cut by June 1st. Vikings as usual throwing stuff up against the wall, hoping something sticks. Someone’s definitely going to sign him later, but not give up draft picks.

  17. Well, since you brought it up, i gotta say this is a low move by a top tier franchise… and i dont forgive low blows lightly. The Vikings have, imo, been one of the top 10 well run franchises in the league, and this is a not a good look and may leave a dark mark on them if they dont do right by a guy who has excelled for them … as a Bills fan i remember him gashing us for a win and love having his brother James on the Buffalo roster. Dalvin has earned better, i hope to see the team do right by the player who they no longer want yetwhose earned his place and then some.

  18. @billshistorian…. because 10 million is about 8 million more than should be paid to a running back – especially when your .500 quarterback makes twice what he’s worth.

  19. They probably have a deal to trade him to Miami after June 1 the dolphins get 13 mil cap space for releasing Byron Jones

  20. ” The Vikings don’t want to pay Cook $10.4 million this year. They’d clearly like to trade him.”//////////// Seems to me PFT answered their own question pretty fast. What would be the hurry to cut him? To sign somebody else? You can cut him and sign said unknown player at any time at all.

Not sure why the Vikings would care what a Bills fan thinks. But, you’re also confused on how the NFL works. Dude has been paid a lot of money. Vikes owe him nothing more than what they want to pay. Cook owes no obligation to take a pay cut. It is what it is.

You obviously don’t know how free agency works. You see….if a team wants him, and they do not want competition in free agency for him, then they must trade for him. Otherwise, he gets to pick what team he goes to next.

Did you miss last season??? 13-4, pass first team. With Cook, lost in playoff game 1. He doesn’t play defense. The team won’t change much without him. He isn’t worth the money. Everybody knows that.

The Vikings saved face on Za’Darius?

    I must have missed that.

Then try to keep up. I think what you meant to say was; “I don’t understand that, as I’m not very knowledgeable about football”. An aging pass rusher than had 1.5 sacks in the last 10 games. The Vikings only pay $1.17 mil to get $10m back in cap space, plus receive a couple of 5th round picks. Good trade for the Vikings. I’d take the same for Cook.

Wait….do you actually think a top 6 RB in yards should be paid the same as the #1 WR and offensive player of the year? Interesting.

  26. “The Vikings saved face on Za’Darius? I must have missed that.”

I trust commentators who are primarily interested in their own teams.

  27. Vikings fans do you get tired of buying jerseys for guys that leave your team

    +++++++
You didn’t mention the $4.5 million in dead money left by the trade, nor the swap of the 6th and 7th for the two 5th round picks.

  29. Fans so embarrassed that they lie about the trade terms. How humiliating.

  30. No incentive to do it now. They can wait until training camp or even week 1 see if someone needs a RB because of injury. His 20223 salary will not be guaranteed until week 1.

  31. I still think Miami and MN have a deal. they both benefit by waiting until June 1. Maiami will be cutting Byron Jones to take on Cooks salary. Not expecting a haul of picks for Cook but I could see a token pick or two. No hurries for either team.
