XFL 3.0 didn’t perform as well on TV as XFL 2.0. But XFL 3.0 actually finished its season, which makes it a positive.

Via Bill Shea of TheAthletic.com, the XFL attracted an average viewership of 1.43 million for the championship game between Arlington and D.C. on Saturday night. The game was televised by ABC.

It was the highest number since Week One, when a pair of games on ABC generated 1.5 million and 1.6 million viewers.

“It performed within our expectations,” ESPN’s vice president of programming and acquisitions Tim Reed told Shea. “We ended on a high note.”

in the 10-week regular season, the XFL averaged 622,000 viewers per game on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, FX, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes. Eight games televised by ABC attracted average audiences of 1.13 million viewers.

The championship game, won by Arlington, brought 22,754 fans to the Alamodome in San Antonio.

There’s definitely room for spring football. It holds its own. And perhaps a merger of the XFL and USFL could make it even bigger.

Still, how profitable will it ever be? That’s the question. And if it ever becomes incredibly profitable, that’s when the NFL shows up and buys the whole thing.

The XFL originally debuted on 2001. The first game, on a Saturday night in February, racked up an estimated 54 million viewers.

  1. They need to do what NFL Europe did. Try and get teams to allocate some young players or even vets to the league.

There’s some quality QBs out there who hardly see any game time and hold a clipboard as the third stringer all year. Get them starting and some gamefilm in the league

  2. Interesting I was not one of them. At least they draw crowds though. USFL not so much, or any

  3. @psj3809 – completely agree. I would only consider watching an NFL minor league type product compared to what they offer now. 1/3rd of the 49ers roster – I never see play. Some team with a average QB might be sitting on a Purdy (if he proves to stay above average) but likely the guy will get cut before he ever sees game action. Send him down to the minors and give him a whirl instead. I understand they need a break still but these small seasons are perfect. Not like practice is that physical now anyway and they don’t see game action even ST.

  4. I flew from D.C. to San Antonio for the game, it was a great way to spend a long weekend. The fan experience was great and I had a blast! It’s really a good product! Most people who are knocking it haven’t watched it. It’s even better on TV than the NFL, particularly the transparency with penalties, how you can hear the officials and things get done quickly and makes sense to fans.

Yes, with one of the Houston teams moving to Vegas. Gamblers?

I’ve been calling for this since week 1 of the USFL this year.

  6. I watched and found it to be entertaining. There is work to do, perhaps a merger with the USFL someday to form a viable farm system for the NFl.

    _____________

Teams are not going to do this, especially with QBs. Can you imagine the uproar if a young QB with potential tore up his knee in a minor league game? Or if any other player with potential suffered a major injury? Times have changed since the NFL Europe experiment.

  8. Happy for them to finish their year. I found it to be much more watchable than the USFL, which was painful. I think an XFL/USFL merger would be interesting, and you could replicate an AFL vs NFL feel, but it would also be interesting if they remained separate but had a crossover championship game.

XFL needs to tidy up parts of his presentation, and could still use some bigger names; hopefully they’ll be able to attract some after successfully completing a full season.
