Matt Ryan: I learned not to shut any doors, anything can happen in NFL

CBS Sports announced recently that former Falcons and Colts quarterback Matt Ryan will be joining their team as an analyst, but Ryan was quick to note that he has not retired as a player.

During an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Ryan said that he’s excited about the opportunity that CBS is giving him to move into the broadcasting world while also touching on the possibility that he could return to action.

Ryan said “all the stars” would have to align for him to get back on the field and that he’s seen enough during his time in the league to know that he can’t rule that out.

“I’ve just learned, at least during my experience in the 15 years I’ve played, to just not shut any doors,” Ryan said. “That’s really the decision behind that. Like I said, I’m excited to kind of take this next step and to move forward, but at the same time, you never know what’s going to happen in this league. Anything can shake out, and so, we’ll see what happens.”

Ryan’s play with the Colts last season left little indication that starting him at quarterback would be a good thing for an NFL team, but desperate times can call for desperate measures. Ryan also has significant financial reasons to keep the light on, so any retirement parties will remain on hold for the time being.

  1. He’s right that anything can happen in the NFL, who would’ve thought a team could blow a 28-3 lead in the Superbowl?

  2. Indy owes him, he wont “retire” until 2024. Ryan is saying all the right things and I don’t think he would rule out returning completely as a starter but those days seem to have passed him

  3. Translation…I’m not closing any doors that may make me more money than I can as tv analyst. That being said it would be smart for the Bucs to sign him to a one year deal

  4. He was completely helpless last year. Slow, no zip whatsoever on his throws. Stick a fork in him.

  5. Of course people have to trot out the tired 28-3 comments about Matt Ryan. He played well that day. Do these people even know he does not play on defense?

  6. If you shut one door, you can always open it again. That’s how doors work.

  7. We as fans of the NFL learned a lot about how are no longer a starting NFL QB after watching you play last year. Good luck on the TV career !

  8. Matt was always a hall of famer at saying the right thing to the media. He has no intention of coming back, people. It’s legalese to preserve the $12 million the Colts owe him if he doesn’t officially retire.

  9. He played well that day. Do these people even know he does not play on defense?
    _________

HOWEVER, he did go along with the “strategy” of constantly snapping the ball quick and failing to run any clock. He had enough experience to know that wasn’t smart and if he slows things down they win that game. It wasn’t just the D; the offense directly contributed by saving all kinds of time the Patriots used to come back.

  10. He was never the same after 28-3. MVP of the league us pretty damn nice but hes beyond washed at this point. Good luck in TV Matty ice

  11. Just take your $12M the Colts are paying you to do nothing, and enjoy your announcing Matt.

  12. I think the Colts did him dirty cutting him so late all the QB jobs were taken. Believe me if he would have been cut in March he would be one of the 49ers QB but that spot went to Sam Darnold. But if an injury happens he could get that call.

Ryan didn’t exactly light it up last season. He barely had more passing TDs than INTs. He also fumbled the ball more than he had TD passes. Ryan even had the biggest comeback in NFL history slapped on him and it wasn’t against the Patriots. It was last season against the Vikings.

  14. Well, you may not be shutting any doors, but pretty sure those doors are being shut on you. Slammed shut.

  15. Matty Ice to Julio Jones has now become Matty cries at unringing phones.

    ______________

In all fairness that loss should not be all on him. It was a total team meltdown, which is Offense, defence, coaching staff, etc.

Did Matt Ryan give up 25 plus points in the Superbowl?
It was that the Atlanta defense?
    Asking for a friend….

  18. He took two sacks in SB 51 that cost the game, as well as not burning the clock.
