Omar Khan: Mitch Trubisky extension will be done shortly

The Steelers are keeping some more continuity in their quarterbacks room behind 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett.

After agreeing to re-sign Mason Rudolph earlier this week, Pittsburgh General Manager Omar Khan said in an interview on the Pat McAfee Show that the club is close to signing Mitchell Trubisky to a new deal.

“We’re finishing up an extension with Mitch Trubisky,” Khan said. “We feel good about our quarterback room, so that was an important piece.

“Obviously, Kenny Pickett is our starter and we feel really good about Mitch Trubisky in the role he’s in. And he feels good about it. And we’ve added Mason Rudolph. So, we’re really excited about that QB room. So there it is, that’ll be done here shortly.”

Khan did not disclose the terms of the extension. But Trubisky signed a two-year deal with the club in free agency last year.

Trubisky appeared in seven games with five starts for Pittsburgh last year. He completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,252 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions.

The No. 2 overall pick of the 2017 draft, Trubisky has appeared in 64 games with 55 starts for the Bears, Bills, and Steelers. He’s compiled a 31-24 record as a starter.

  1. I’ve actually never heard of a team giving both backup QB’s extensions in the same week, let alone offseason. Maybe they’re doing it for trade reasons in the future. But it seems like they’re not sold on Kenny just yet…

  2. Huh? Is this same Mitchell Trubisky the Bears were dumb enough to trade up for even though Patrick Mahomes was there for the taking had they stood pat?

  3. The key to survival in Pittsburgh is to tread carefully around Khan and stay on his good side and not make him angry.
No one wants to feel the wrath of Khan.

  4. Resigning Trubisky the first step to returning the team to playoff relevance! Lol

  5. Three terrible QBs discussing new more creative ways to throw interceptions. This is a 4 win team without Tomlin but his streak will definitely end this season. Last place in the North.

  6. This is actually a very smart move by the Steelers. Wrap him up now with backup pay before having other teams offer him more for backup/starter potential. Once we get Canada out of town, it will be interesting to see what we can do offensively.

I hate when people look back with hindsight like this. Yeah obviously Mahomes is much better, but at the time, Trubisky was seen as a fairly sure thing, albeit with a limited ceiling and Mahomes wasn’t seen as a sure thing, but someone with a higher ceiling.

And the Bears could have had? Patrick Mahomes, yikes!

    ______________

And the Bears could have had Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady too…..You’re Raiders are going to have 3 wins this season and Mitch Trubisky is better than Derek Carr.

Mitch Trubisky was absolutely not seen as a sure thing. He only started one season. He was a huge risk. The most sure thing in that draft Deshaun Watson who at least on the field would have been a defensible pick over Mahomes. The only knock on Mahomes was that he was coached poorly.

Must not be sold on Kenny.
    =====================
Why would you think that? Kenny Pickett replaced Mitch Trubisky pretty quickly & is obviously the guy. Signing back-up QBs has nothing to do what the team thinks of the starter, otherwise they would say it is an open competition. The Steelers didn’t say it was an open competition because it isn’t. You do realize that Pickett was a 1st round pick that Pittsburgh drafted just last year, right?

  11. Unfortunately, Mitch just has never looked all that comfortable under center in the NFL. Personally, I’d have Mason Rudolph ahead of Mitch in the depth chart.

  12. Trubisky had an awful rookie year, nowhere near Mac Jones’s rookie year, or Herbert’s.

    lol

They have 3 backup QBs in that room.

    ________

Just like the Lions and Raiders…

  14. When you have three QB’s up for the job it really means you don’t have one. None of them are starters in this league.

  15. I hate when people look back with hindsight like this. Yeah obviously Mahomes is much better, but at the time, Trubisky was seen as a fairly sure thing, albeit with a limited ceiling and Mahomes wasn’t seen as a sure thing, but someone with a higher ceiling.

There wasn’t a single credible person who thought this outside of the Bears front office.

Trubisky had one season as a starter, a sub 60% completion rate and had a book on him as having accuracy problems.

  16. The Bears were better with Trubisky than with Fields. Mahommes going to the Bears is not the same player. Coaching and environment matter. I’m sure Mahommes would still have been good, but without Reid and Kelce and a year to understudy behind Alex Smith maybe he’s just a good QB like Justin Herbert.
