Lions center Frank Ragnow optimistic about his health after “brutal” foot injury

Lions center Frank Ragnow has suffered the same injury to his left foot in each of the last two seasons, but he’s optimistic that the worst is behind him.

“Coming along,” Ragnow said, via MLive.com. “We’re good. We’re being smart with it though. We’re not rushing and making sure I get enough rest, because last season was one to forget in terms of that. It was brutal. So, just trying to be smart with it.”

Ragnow tore the plantar plate in his left foot in Week Four of 2021 and missed the rest of the season. He rehabbed that injury and thought it was behind him, only to suffer the exact same injury in Week One of the 2022 season.

“I was so mad it happened again,” Ragnow said. “I was over it, and had a great training camp, feeling good, and then the first game of the season it happened. So, I just had to fight through it.”

Fight through it he did, missing only Week Two but then starting every game the rest of the year despite never getting a full week of practice and often playing through pain. Ragnow says that at this point there’s no surgery that could repair the injury, and he’s just going to have to deal with it, but the pain isn’t as bad as it had been and he’s confident it’s an injury he can tolerate.

“It’s a deal where it’s kind of inoperable, so it’s something we’re trying to navigate,” he said. “But hopefully it’s not going to be anything near the altitude of last year, where it was, like, brutal.”

Ragnow was chosen to the Pro Bowl last year, and the Lions think that when he’s good to go he’s as good as any center in the NFL. They’re hoping the worst of the injury is behind him.

  1. Wishing Frank a complete recovery and thankful our center is healthy. All this factors into who will top the NFCN at the end of this season and everyday it looks more like it will bethe Packers.

  2. This team is full of injuries for 2023, not looking good. They should have drafted a QB in the first, Goff is going to choke.

  3. Round 1, Pick 12 — RB Jahmyr Gibbs – INJURED
Round 3, Pick 68 overall — QB Hendon Hooker – INJURED
Veteran Linemen Frank Ragnow – INJURED

Quintez Cephus WR – RELEASED (Gambling Scandal)
C.J. Moore WR – RELEASED (Gambling Scandal)

Jameson Williams WR – SUSPENSION (Gambling Scandal)
Stanley Berryhill WR – SUSPENSION (Gambling Scandal)

Holmes and Campbell are doing a phenomenal job so far!

  4. That sounds like a painful and frustrating injury. Hopefully this year he stays healthy and ready to anchor the middle of a Top 3 OLine.

  5. I doubt not the guys toughness and skill, but here I’d question his wisdom. You’ve an serious, inoperable injury to your foot; I’d be worried about being able to walk normally, or at all once my playing career is done. In his shoes, I’d be considering hanging up those cleats.

painful and frustrating is exactly what being a Lions fan is all about…

  7. “anchor the middle of a Top 3 OLine.”

The only thing the Lions are top 3 at is the worst franchise in the NFL and the anchor of the basement of the NFCN.

It’s the Fords. Note how cheao they go with GMs and Coaches.

  9. Injured in week 1 and was a pro bowler? More of a joke then Huntley being in the pro bowl…

  10. Wow, Lions have been bad for so long that I’ve forgotten what it’s like to have Haters. Detroit is absolutely coming for this division and the rest will have to get use to them being on top. I know, it’s a weird feeling, but, you’ll all come around.

  11. Wow there is a lot of chirping from closet Bears fans on here. The Lions are favorites in 12 of 17 games this year including EVERY home game. Are you smarter than Vegas?

That’s one very obtuse way to look at it… the other way to look at it is he overcame the injury and was still one of the best Centers in the league…

But hey some people look at the success of others and assume it’s a fluke and they are lucky instead of putting in the work to be the best at what they do. So if being obtuse makes you feel better, then go off king!

That’s why they say FORD stands for Fixed Or Repaired Daily.

  14. Great MN kid — wish him the best. I hate saying this as an opposing NFCN fan, but if that Lions O-line stays healthy they can rival the Eagles O-line for best in the NFC.

  15. Based on the description of the injury, it will never heal. The best he can hope for is to manage it and deal with the pain during games.

If you’re referring to me, I’m not a Bears fan, I’m not even an NFCN fan. Vegas is a joke. ur fantasy pipe dream opinions about a team that has historically choked for 7 decades are hilarious. BTW, the Bears had a great draft and have a brighter future than the Lions IMO. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bears sweep the Lions in the second half of the season. The Bears have the best WR core in the division by far, you better pray Fields struggles to pass…. R u smarter than a 10 year old?

  17. The Bears have the best WR core in the division by far

Ha! I wasn’t referring to you but you have revealed yourself. Only a Bears fan could possibly think this. Good luck not having the worst record in the league again!

  18. Sure are confident behind that 67 year failure track record. Good luck with your WR core, you lost 4 WRs to gambling. Again, I’m not a Bears fan and you have serious issues dude. Get a life other than living on PFT flexing your mouth behind a KB

  19. No one is hating, I think ur just triggered because you know the Lions had a terrible draft and have some locker room issues and you can’t accept reality.

  20. You got triggered by a post that was not directed at you and your username exists only to disparage one team in particular. In fact, you created it to contradict mine. One could argue it is you who needs a life. Have a great day!

  21. When the lions go into arrowhead week 1 and win then win against Seattle week two. All the clowns that comment now will vanish!

  22. Their OL should be even better this coming season. Montgomery and Gibbs will feast.

  23. Bears fans are trash, they are upset that their team has only 1 winning season in the past 10 years. They also know that as long as they have a RB playing QB they never will have a chance. Vikings and Lions are the only two good teams in the NFCN.

Keep crying Bears fans, you’ll be drafting a QB next year.

  24. I’m a Bears fan. Ragnow is a really good player and I wish him well. Liked what the Lions were doing until the draft. Nice draft last year for sure, but a bit of a head scratcher this year. Looking forward to playing the Lions this year. I think it will be a good matchup.

  25. It’s a dream for the haters to go away, unfortunately we suck so bad for so long they will never go away.

All dumpster trucks go through Detroit!

  26. The Lions took a huge step back this off season. The Lions are going to struggle next year.

The little kitten fan with an unhealthy obsession is cute, even though he’s an embarrassment to Detroit population.
