Omar Khan: I really hope Alex Highsmith is a Steeler for a long time

The Steelers are signing backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky to a contract extension and a member of the defense may be next up on that front.

Linebacker Alex Highsmith is heading into the final year of his contract after recording 14.5 sacks during the 2022 season. The Steelers typically don’t negotiate contract extensions once the regular season is underway, so there’s a window to get something done with Highsmith before he has a chance to push his price tag even higher with another productive year off the edge.

During a recent appearance on 93.7 The Fan, General Manager Omar Khan indicated that a deal with Highsmith is on his radar screen.

“We don’t like to talk specifically about an individual contract, but I’ll say this, he’s a Steeler,” Khan said. “Since the day he got here, he’s been awesome. He gets better and better every year, and I really hope Alex is here for a long time.”

T.J. Watt is signed through 2025 and extending Highsmith would set them up with an edge rushing corps for several years to come.

  1. I am sure overrated will be. One of the comments to follow. He benefits from TJ’S presence so don’t think he would be as effective else where but want to keep him.

  2. So now we know the reason for the Trubisky and Witherspoon moves. Freeing up cap space for Highsmith’s extension.

  3. Give it a few, he’ll show up soon. He will hear his notification from his basement.

  4. I worried for nothing when Colbert retired. So far Kahn has made great decisions for our team. Great draft Great FA’s. So if Kahn doesn’t re up highsmith I’ll trust his judgment. I personally think highsmith is worth a new contract. People who say he disappears when watt is out need to understand it works both ways when you get the full attention.

Hilarious! I thought I was the only one who noticed. Bud Dupree 2.0 well at least it’s not NKeal Harry 2.0….right?

Witherspoon was getting cut, anyway. Can’t pay $4M to a guy who is unreliable and even when available and playing well (both are crap shoots with him), probably not a starter within that position group for the Steelers at this point.

  7. Am fan but Watt presence is big reason for Highsmith numbers, just like Dupree. Watt has got to play at least 14 gms healthy for this team to even sniff a playoff.

Did a great job of missing the playoffs in his first year at the helm! Many more to come!

  9. Those who say that Alex disappears when TJ is out have a very short memory. TJ was out or at not full strength the majority of the season last year, and Alex had his best year yet. I think eight of his sacks came while TJ was out. This includes the first game vs the Bengals when he had three sacks. He did just fine. Definitely not Dupree.
Dupree got weaker fast, Alex is only getting better.

If you’re going to troll at least do research. He took over AFTER the season.
