Jets offensive tackle Mekhi Becton had his fifth-year option declined this offseason, and heard coach Robert Saleh tell him that if he wants to be an NFL left tackle, he’s going to have to earn it. But Becton says any perception that he’s not happy with where his career is heading into Year Four is incorrect.

“This is the most excited I’ve ever been going into training camp,” Becton told Newsday.

As the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Becton has been a disappointment, struggling to stay healthy and starting just 14 games so far in his career. He expects this year to be different.

“I don’t want to look too far ahead, but I definitely feel way more confident than I’ve felt these past three years,” Becton said. “I feel like we’re going to win a lot of games, have a lot of fun, and just the energy and vibe with the players at the facility is uplifting.”

Becton says he’s been eating less, has lost more than 50 pounds, and has been working with a personal trainer who is getting him into great shape. With a good season, Becton can hit free agency in March and make himself a lot of money.

  1. All about him getting his next contract, then he will be the same player he has been since he was drafted. Which in his case is a big fat BUST!

  2. Slow and unavailable the first three years then he turns it on for the contract year. Rinse and repeat.

  3. #11 overall pick that Joe Douglas did a “deep dive” on.

Can’t make it up. Ya just can’t.

  4. So does that mean for the previous three years he went into camp with the expectation of disappointing everyone?

  5. The Jets will finish higher in the standings than the Patriots. That’s a given.

You keep thinking that. It’s like you don’t pay attention to reality.

They won’t be throwing away 5 or 6 games like they did last year because of the offense.

    Delusional.

Jets to start 0-4 or 0-5.

  7. Of course, yall’ hate, I get it. But when the guy has been on the field, he’s been dominate, definitely not a bust. Now he needs to stay on the field.

  8. I’ll take that bet. Jets start 0-4, I won’t post again all season.,If they win one of first 4,You stay off all season. Like the last bet you did, but didn’t honor,of course. The Patriot Way!

  9. You could copy and paste this from the past three years. Every season he’s lost a bunch of weight, working harder than ever before, best shape of his life. I know he’s had bad luck with injuries but in year four why is he 50+ lbs. overweight every offseason? That’s not how a professional athlete takes care of their body if they’re dedicated to their job.

    He stinks.

So does your entire QB room. Maybe worry about your own team before constantly trolling other teams. People like you make me happy when I see the Pats finish in the bottom of the AFC East. Post-Brady, New England has not been viewed as a threat at all. Apparently Brady was the magic sauce for the success and not BB. I know the Pats’ trolls are very slow learners so I don’t expect them to realize this for another 10 seasons. Meanwhile intelligent football fans simply laugh at your idiotic homerism. I’d say “be better” but you’ve repeatedly proven that’s a long shot or completely impossible.

Let’s make our deal, kid. Stop running away.

  12. Becton had a promising rookie year then lost 2 seasons to injury.
Lets hope he can stay healthy and have an at least OK year after missing 2 years.

  13. Even if he plays well, only a fool GM will give him a big second contract because of the chance he reverts to the fat, slow, injury prone bust he was up till now.
