Will Goodell get the votes this week to force Thursday night flexing through?

Whatever Roger wants, Roger gets. And Roger wants Thursday night flexing.

Commissioner Goodell came close in March. Two votes short. Twenty-two yes, eight no, two abstentions.

Of course, there wasn’t an official vote, because that would have officially made the effort a failure. Instead, the measure was tabled for two months. And, with a vote expected this week, it’s safe to say the Commissioner believes he has managed to move two of the 10 to yes.

That also assumes the group of 22 that previously voted for the move haven’t had a change of heart. Maybe one or more of those teams re-thought their position after Giants co-owner John Mara called the proposed late-season sliding of games from Thursday to Sunday and Sunday to Thursday as “abusive” to fans.

And Mara was right. It is abusive to fans, especially to those sufficiently passionate to spend the time and effort and money to travel to games, under the impression that games will happen when scheduled, not three days earlier or three days later.

Much remains unknown regarding how often this power, once the league office finagles it, will be used. How much notice will be given? How many games can be flexed from Thursday to Sunday and, in turn, Sunday to Thursday in a given year?

Also, will the league use it right away, or wait until next year? There’s no need to force the vote now, if it’s something that wouldn’t be used until 2024.

Then there’s the reality that most of the teams that opposed Thursday night flexing ended up with multiple Sunday-Thursday games in 2023. The league calls it a coincidence. There’s a belief in league circles that it wasn’t coincidental.

And the vague notion that there is price to pay for resisting the NFL’s idea of progress could be enough to get some of the holdouts to relent, this time around.

Regardless, it shouldn’t happen. The simple reality is that it likely will.

Because football is family. Except when you plan to take your family to a game in a warm climate over the holidays, only to find out that the game isn’t happening when it was supposed to be played.

  1. If he’s learned anything from all his working alongside the sports books, it’s how to make offers that can’t be refused.

  2. Can’t wait for the day when the league locks out and there is no season.

Greed and ego ruins the game.

  3. Goodell doesn’t care about players safety, only getting improved TV ratings.

  4. Watch the NASCAR races to see what happens when you get too greedy and start screwing the fans over.

  5. The owners will turn their back on Goodell eventually, only when they start losing money. Unfortunately for them, whoever they think will be able to bail out the sinking ship will have an impossible job.

Yep, it’s amazing how many people turned against NASCAR once it banned the Confederate flag and allowed Bubba Wallace to drive.

  7. This idiot doesn’t care about the fans. How do you plan your travel plans ??? Without fans, there’s no nfl. Roger must go. He has to much power.

  8. This is 💯 a slap in the face to ticket buying fans!!! Why would anyone want to buy out of town tickets knowing that the game may not be played on the weekend it’s scheduled to be. This is a total jerk move by the NFL

  9. you don’t have the votes…YOU DON’T HAVE THE VOTES ha ha ha ha ha. You’re gonna need congressional approval and YOU DON’T HAVE THE VOTES!

  12. Football is family. They never promised it wasn’t dysfunctional or abusive.

  13. The NFL will pass this ridiculous move to enhance profits. Once Jerry Jones became the owner of the Dallas Cowboys and was made the shadow Commissioner just like Tex Schramn with Pete Rozell. The fan are only marketing tools to increase the bottom line. When fans loose interest in the diluted NFL product and the owners wallets grow thin. That is when the owners will notice. Until then they are laughing all the way to the bank with a rigged product.

No one is entitled to an opinion, especially an uninformed or irrelevant opinion. Anyone can express an opinion, but no one is entitled to one. If everyone was entitled to one this site would not be allowed to moderate comments.

Perhaps instead of comparing someone to terrorists you would like address the subject matter of the comment, that being that non-ticket purchasers have no stake in this issue and that the overwhelming majority of people here will never be ticket purchasers. Those are facts by the way, not opinions.

  16. Add a second bye week and ensure it falls before every team’s thursday game. Gives you an extra week to the season and makes sure the players don’t have short turnarounds.

  17. Maybe when this blows up in Goodell’s face, the owners will have enough votes to fire the vindictive jerk.

  18. I can’t wait to hear him tell us how much he “cares” about the paying customers. He will tell us the fans want this.

  19. I’m not sure I understand the problem. Big time college football programs see their games moved from Saturday day to Saturday night and from Saturday to Thursday occasionally. If college fans can handle the changes surely NFL fans can handle them.

  20. I’d really like to go to the Denver Detroit game, but this kind of possibility makes me think twice. Airlines ain’t gonna relax their fee policy to support the shield’s monetization policies. Ratings >>> attendance for Roger and the Oligarchs.

  21. Hopefully the owners have installed new firmware and updated his drivers. That way he’ll sounds like a believable human instead of a malfunctioning robot.

  22. If Thursday night flexing leads to more revenue, it will also lead to an increase in the salary cap and more money for the players. Maybe Joe Burrow can’t earn a billion without this latest NFL greed play. Hogs get slaughtered…

  23. A group of friends from High School get together yearly and fly in from different parts of the country for a game. Several of us usually go to an away game or two. We already have our tickets and reservations for the Bills-Raiders game. We plan a couple of days of golf, out to dinner, tailgating and the game. Flights and hotels need to be booked in advance.
There is no ‘Trip Insurance” that we can purchase to take care of a late flex. We’re currently looking at the Bills-Dolphins game in Early January as a possible away game. They still haven’t announced a date. We can’t book flights , buy tickets, make tee times or get hotels and rental cars until we know when the game is being played. Let us know now when the game is being played and if there is the possibility of flexing. If there is a possibility of late flexing from Sunday to Thursday we’re not coming.

  24. This is a great way to manipulate betting odds. Everything they do from now on will be in furtherance of making money for the big gambling sites. Follow the money. Here an easy bet, I’ll bet Roger never has another “townhall ” w fans.

  25. Chances are pretty likely that if he’s determined to hold the vote this week then he has the yes votes and with Bezos already complaining about the lousey Thursdays games for last year he intends to use it this year to pacify a billionaire.

  26. Anyone who votes against him better take a look at the Giants schedule this coming year. What happened was so blatant it convinces you he thinks he’s bulletproof, figuratively speaking.

Totally different. College games are attended mostly by local residents and students. Arguably the team that will be impacted the most is Green Bay. I’m a season ticket holder in California. And with a population of just over 100K, Green Bay fans travel the farthest to a game than any other franchise.

Making plans for a weekend excursion (airfare/hotel/PTO) and then finding out the game is flexed to Thursday is beyond disruptive. Those fans traveling out of town now have to either pay exhorbitant travel fees due to last minute change or dump tickets into a market where seat prices are tanking. I’m not asking anyone to cry me a river but this plan to line Amazon’s pockets by hurting the average person with tickets is beyond screwed up.
