Aaron Rodgers showed up for first day of Jets OTAs

New Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers showed up in New York with what appeared to be an eager desire to participate in the full offseason program. Then, Rodgers said he’d miss some of the sessions.

For now, he’s there. Rodgers attended the first OTA of the 2023 offseason on Monday.

It’s good for him, his teammates, and his new team. While Rodgers knows the offense being implemented by new coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, Rodgers doesn’t know all of his new teammates — and all of his new teammates don’t know him. They need to be around each other. Thy need to become comfortable with each other.

The Jets players, many of whom were in grade school when Rodgers burst onto the scene as MVP of Super Bowl XLV, are starstruck by Rodgers. They need to get past that. Rodgers needs to help them do it.

There’s only one way it happens. They have to get used to him.

Rodgers learned that (or at least he should have) last year, when the Packers traded receiver Davante Adams and a slew of new wideouts arrived to replace him, from rookies Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs to veteran Sammy Watkins. Watson and Doubs didn’t seem to get truly comfortable with Rodgers, and Rodgers didn’t seem to get truly comfortable with Watson and Doubs, until the Packers had dug themselves a hole from which they had to struggle to emerge.

They almost did. They ultimately didn’t. It’s hard not to wonder whether they would have, if guys like Watson and Doubs had been a little more comfortable a little sooner.

This year, with the Jets facing stiff competition in their division and a tough schedule, the sooner everyone is on the same page, the better. So it’s good that Rodgers showed up for Day One. It will be great for the team if he sticks around.

  1. As much as I dislike this premadonna that is a great sign for Jets fans that he’s engaged, and appears to be eager to stick it to Green Bay for giving up on him. This is what leaders do Lamar……

  2. Glad he is taking initiative and showing up for Jets OTAs now, but makes you wonder why he wouldn’t for the Packers. Obviously, he had checked out in Green Bay, which is unfortunate.

  3. And make sure he’s not given his own office on the second floor so “teammates” have to walk by the coaching staff just to schedule a time to hang out with him. I hope Nathaniel learned that lesson from his Broncos experience

  4. Same o, same o. Rodgers was a great qb for the Packers but as got older his thoughts on what he could do regarding OTA’s changed. Didn’t matter he was making HUGE dollars, didn’t matter if his wr’s were rookies/young .. he didn’t feel HE needed it and didn’t show up. It was time for him to go and now he’s the Jet’s “problem”.

  5. Good. The Jets deserve to have their well compensated QB show up. At least 65% of the time.

  6. Rogers on his best behavior as he renegotiates his contract and gets to know NY media. Whatever his motivation, it’s all good news for the J-E-T-S.

  7. The ego of people like Rodgers is really hard to understand. How can he be so arrogant as to think that skipping sessions with his new teammates is going to help build chemistry and timing? If I were the Jets, I’d be “irritated” about this apparent lack of caring by Rodgers. People who care show up and get the work done–and someone making $50 million a year really ought to care a lot.

  8. The next article on the subject will be that Rodgers left OTAs early and will not return.at least he showed up for a little while.Rodgers has done and will continue to do what he deems he must do,from skipping OTAs to sitting out practice days.that is after all,Aaron Rodgers, the teams biggest headache.

  9. Something he never did in Green Bay. And you wonder why the Packers went 8-9 last year. Didn’t bother to come in and work with his rookie receivers. Now it’s all for show because it’s all about him!

  10. The Jets players, many of whom were in grade school when Rodgers burst onto the scene as MVP of Super Bowl XLV, are starstruck by Rodgers.
    ______________

Starstruck, really? AR is almost old enough to be the younger players father. I doubt very seriously that most players are starstruck by any other player.

  11. He’s a stand up model American! So glad he escaped Green Bay and now you can see how much of team player he is that he has removed himself from toxic GB. The Packers collapse is upon us and it’s glorious!

  12. Apparently his travel agent could not find any darkness retreats available this week… Oh wait, the rest of the NFL considers the NY Jets franchise a darkness retreat in and of itself. This is all starting to make sense!

  13. So, a guy that just got paid $150 million for a part-time seasonal job decided to show up for work. Good to know.

  14. Once he arrives at camp in June he’ll just hang with Lazard and Cobb anyway. He’ll know the pressroom microphone better than his teammates.

  15. But I thought the reason for signing Randall Cobb is that he can teach the receivers everything about Rodgers including the secret hand signals so that Rodgers doesn’t have to be there??

  16. And maybe that’s the problem with Aaron Rodgers. That a franchise quarterback showing up to work with his teammates is even News. It shouldn’t be.

  17. This is tremendous news. Aaron knows how critically important it is to keep showing up until he’s played 65% of the snaps this season.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^

Green Bay selected him in the draft when he was in freefall — the team had belief in him when no one else did — and made him a very wealthy man along the way.

I believe you misjudge the man and the circumstances.

  19. Good to see he’s getting his act together. No longer looks like a subway bum and actually showing up to work like Brady did for 20+ years and 7 SB rings. Maybe, just maybe he’ll be a true TEAM leader and not a posse leader for the first time in over a decade.

  20. The Packers did Rodgers a big favor by trading him. He was in a worn out relationship in GB after Gutey drafted J Love for the future. Breaking up with and Trading Rodgers has rejuvenated him. It’s like he’s got a new girlfriend,… excited.

  21. One post season run??? Better check how many times the Packers were in post season play during his tenure in Green Bay.

  22. The ego of people like Rodgers is really hard to understand.

How many guys can play quarterback in the NFL? Are there even 20 good quarterbacks right now?

He was the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers. He may as well be JC. Absolutely deified.

Hes from California, AND went to Berkley. Marches to his own drum, 100%. Doesn’t care what anyone has to say about it.

The average person can’t relate to this. As you peel the onion back, its not hard to see why he is the way he is.

  23. Something he never did in Green Bay. And you wonder why the Packers went 8-9 last year. Didn’t bother to come in and work with his rookie receivers.
    =============

Probably had the most consistent run with receivers of any QB in his era.

Driver-Jennings-Nelson-Cobb-Adams… literally, you could draw a line from 1 guy to the next, over 17 years.

Not Rodgers fault the rookies weren’t ready to contribute. Rookie receivers rarely are. Horrible plan if you expect to be a contender.

Oh, you mean like when Favre was eager to stick it to Green Bay, and then met a guy named Tracy Porter? Yeah, that worked out well for him. Garbage.

    ____________

You consider Green Bay agreeing to the largest contract in history giving up on him? And what in the world does the AR attending OTAs have to do with Lamar? By the way, Lamar is practicing with the Ravens during OTAs

I think that you read the wrong article. AR is not skipping sessions. However, this comment is consistent with most of yours that show your envy of talented, highly compensated individuals.

  27. Its he subtle way of giving the packers the finger and they did everything for him but he could never ever take that they picked his replacement in the draft. His ego and his attitiude went to hell after that. Also his play did too. He sure didnt bust his ass for this team once Love was picked.

  28. Gutey drafted the Packers next long term QB. Current QB not happy, shows them by winning the next 2 MVPs. Future QB learns from the HOFer and is ready. 2 MVPs motivate the Jets to take him and his attitude on (and declining pay?) for essentially a 1st and 2nd. Normalcy restored in GB and the future looks bright.

    What’s not to like?

  29. I take back what I said about Rodgers getting his act together and practicing like Brady did. He is already out with an “injury” but not seeking medical assistance is a good sign he’s faking it to avoid practicing.

    ++++++

You draw a straight line from the Packers drafting Love to Rodgers decline in play?
He won two MVP’s AFTER Green Bay drafted Love.
