Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger recently had current Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett on his podcast admitted he wasn’t initially rooting for Pickett to play well as a rookie.

The thought, Roethlisberger explained, was that he didn’t want to be forgotten so easily.

But Roethlisberger’s feelings changed as 2022 continued, as he noted, “I’m glad I transitioned to loving and rooting for you.”

Pickett was asked about the exchange during his Tuesday press conference at Steelers OTAs.

“He’s honest and out front about it,” Pickett said, via Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “He’s a fan now and he’s pulling for us. It was pretty cool to hear him say that and to be at his house and to meet his kids and his wife and get to know him a little bit better. We’ll continue to build that relationship, and I’ll reach out if I have any questions.

“I’m excited to go into Year Two with another guy in my corner pulling for me.”

The Steelers went 7-5 in games Pickett started as a rookie, with the quarterback finishing with a 63 percent completion rate, 2,404 yards passing, seven touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He piloted three fourth-quarter comebacks and four game-winning drives, helping fuel optimism about his and Pittsburgh’s future.

  1. Just as long as he isnt pulling you into a hotel room or a bathrooom at a bar … People don’t forget.

  2. The Steelers have produced more hall of fame quarterbacks than any other team. Life is good in the Steel City! Can’t wait to watch us dominate this season.

  3. Not a Ben fan at all, find him to be a blowhard but really appreciate his honesty. Anyone who gives Ben crap for answering honestly should really stop and think. We get a player who finally speaks honestly vs coach speak. Regardless of profession hoping the person who replaces you succeeds to the point where they use it to forget about you isn’t something most would want.

  4. Ben wanted to play it out….he had another year left.
Look at the all time stats….several more totem pole spots were in reach.
The feeling was not mutual on Art Rooney Ave.

  5. Seems Kenny is the adult in this situation….Ben knows the taste of his feet having had them stuck in his mouth with some of his “honesty”

  6. Extending Trubisky was not a vote of confidence for Pickett.

And – It was surprising to see that Ben was a me guy.

He will flip pretty quickly if Picket plays poorly. Just like the fans will.

  7. Make a selfish mistake. Admit it, own it, and improve yourself from it. Then move on.
Pretty much describes the process of living. At least it does for Ben and I (me?).

Hall of fame NFL quarterbacks by team they played with:
    New York Giants – 5
    Chicago Bears – 4
And eight teams with 3, Chicago Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, Houston Oilers, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, and San Francisco 49ers.

  9. I thought Pickett would be the overall #1 pick when I saw him play in college. It didn’t surprise me to see all the bad teams that draft early pass him up. I figured that’s why they’re bad teams. It also didn’t surprise me to see the Steelers draft him, even though they had just signed Trubisky. I’ll bet they had him rated as #1 overall, and were shocked that he was still available. The Steelers got Big Ben with the 11th pick. They probably didn’t think they’d get another HOFer so soon, but they did. That’s why they’re always winning. It’s awesome to see these guys become buddies. I think the Steelers will compete for the Super Bowl this year. They found their answer to Joe Burrow. This division rivalry will be the best in football.
