Kyle Shanahan: Brock Purdy to begin throwing soon, optimistic he’ll be available Week One

There is some positive news regarding 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

Purdy remains on schedule in his rehab from elbow surgery and is slated to start throwing sometime next week, head coach Kyle Shanahan said in his Tuesday press conference.

Shanahan said the quarterback is still doing well and the club is optimistic that he’ll be available for the start of the regular season.

“It’s not really that it’s a moving target, it’s that only God knows and it’s all estimates,” Shanahan said. “So, it depends on what ‘people’ have got for me. But I mean, we’re hoping for Week One and feeling pretty optimistic about that. That’s what we’re hoping for, he’ll be ready to play in Week One.

“And usually that doesn’t mean that’s the day he comes back — usually you’ve got to come before that to make that goal. And that’s kind of the goal we’re hoping for and don’t have any reason to think differently.”

While the 49ers do have Trey Lance and Sam Darnold on their roster, Shanahan and G.M. John Lynch have made it clear that Purdy is set to be their starting quarterback if he’s healthy. In staying on schedule as he has, Purdy has put himself in a good position to be behind center when San Francisco starts the season against the Steelers.

  1. That’s kind of amazing. Medical technology had advanced so much. 20 years ago, that would have been career ending

  2. Can’t wait for this guy to get a full season under his belt and show everyone why he was a 7th round pick.

  3. If we know anything about Mr. Shanahan, it’s that every decision he makes is with the safety of his starting QB foremost in his mind. And it doesn’t matter if that person was originally the starter, or because for some freakish reason they’re yet again down to their third string option. One thing least season clearly showed us his he would never, ever consider putting in a QB who wasn’t 100% healthy against one of the fiercest pass rushes in the league.

  4. Just like that Purdy is the unabated QB1,what if he’s just average even after a full season of starting?Lance should really push to get traded anywhere for some gametime,I don’t think there’s any coming back from basically being benched for a rookie when you haven’t played that many games since your 2nd year in college

  5. Eagles fans hoping he’s healthy week 13. Of course he could just as easily be benched by then.

  6. Oh good. Maybe they’ll stop whining about not being able to carry 3 QB’s on the roster when they had every opportunity to carry 3 QB’s on the roster and specifically chose not to for the NFC Championship Game.

That’s great they got a new rule passed tho to compensate for their own poor decision. Kudos to you sir.

  7. Shanahan has had the most turbulent qb room in the nfl during his tenure. What a guy.

  8. If Purdy is healthy, he will be the starter. I’m looking forward to seeing the Niners play Philly in week 13, regardless of the outcome. You can bet it will be a smashmouth game.

  9. How ridiculous. You give away 3 first round picks and don’t use a guy then use a 7th round pick who’s now damaged goods. The guy will not come back and play the same. What a joke.

  10. Only a foolish head coach would not go with the hot hand at QB. What they paid for Lance doesn’t matter at all at this point. You go with your best players…at least the ones that have been producing results. Only a fool of a head coach would EVER choose their starters based on what they gave to get them.

  11. HE got hurt for a reason. Shanhan is awful at running his offense to be able to also protect the QB. He doesn’t believe in doing any max protect formations when he really needs to. That’s literally why Purdy got hurt.

My guess is, after almost a year of game tape, this kid will feel the squeeze.

Yes precisely as the post above clearly stated their GM said he’s the starter week 1 if healthy

  13. Let’s be real …SF QB room is pretty lame. They are the most overrated team in the NFL. Wouldn’t be surprised if Seattle takes the division

  14. “Shanahan and G.M. John Lynch have made it clear that Purdy is set to be their starting quarterback if he’s healthy.”

Not sure I agree with this statement. The “leader in the clubhouse” is not always the leader when it’s all said and done. “He’s earned that right…” yes he has, but can somebody else earn that right in camp? Time will tell.

When Brock is ready to go I think he will be the starter, but Lynch and Shanahan have certainly given themselves some wiggle room if one of the other two really impress in camp.

As a Niner fan I’m apprehensive. We have seen this before – Jimmy G was 5-0 after being traded mid season with abysmal weapons around him. Jimmy G turned out to be… well… abysmal.

  15. A lot of people here are doubting Purdy. Obviously none of them saw this kid play through all those 7 games he played. He was on pace to 37 tds – 8ints, over 4k yards and a 120 passer rating on a 17 game season.
