The NFL’s push to expand the reach of the league internationally led to teams being awarded marketing rights to foreign countries starting in January 2022 and the league announced an expansion of the effort on Tuesday.

France is part of that expansion. The Saints asked for and received marketing rights in the country, which is their first foray into what the league now calls the Global Markets program and they are the first team to have those rights in France.

The Republic of Ireland is also a new addition to the program. The Steelers and Jaguars have been granted rights in the country and the Steelers have also been granted rights in Northern Ireland. The Jaguars already had marketing rights in the United Kingdom while the Steelers are also in Mexico.

The league also announced that the Chiefs, Buccaneers, and Patriots now have marketing rights in Austria and Switzerland. All three teams already had rights in Germany and the Falcons have been added to the group of teams with rights in that country.

  1. Globalism has never helped anyone. The NFL should avoid the globalism mindset. Be like Chick-Fil-A, they are the very best at what they do, no competitor can touch them. CFA doesn’t mess with the menu and they go where their customer base is. The NFL can learn a lot from CFA.

  2. This will undoubtedly upset those who believe that the NFL should solely be in the United States. There is nothing uniquely American about the league. There is absolutely no reason why our friends around the world should not be able to enjoy the NFL.

  3. Uh-oh. Watch: Half the season, including a few wildcard games, will be played overseas within 5 years

  4. Steelers will play a game in Ireland in ’24.
Rooney Family traces back to both the Republic (Dublin)and to the Northern English subject in Newry.

  5. Actually makes a ton of sense for Saints to get France and Steelers to get Ireland.

And a Super Bowl in China

  7. Goodell has really screwed up the game in a lot of ways since taking over.

  8. I understand Pittsburgh for Ireland (Dan Rooney was Ambassador) but why the Shaguars, who already have London? Wouldn’t Chicago, Cleveland, New England (Boston) or New York be a better fit when you factor in demographic makeup of the cities (large Irish American populations) and who might book a bucket-list trip to Ireland for a game or vice versa?

  9. It’s one thing if the NFL wants to expand to Europe. But if that’s what they want, then they need to make a separate European Division. Doing it the way they want to now is totally disrespecting the devoted fans. Sure they can watch their team on TV, but they lose a home game to cheer their team on in person. Now the 17 game season makes sense. Teams will still have 8 home games but the fans will be paying for more. Plus the NFL and the teams will get the revenue from the foreign based games. I think the league has crossed the line. Endorsing legalized gambling, flexing Thursday night games and now a number of games in Europe. This could be the beginning of the downhill slide for the NFL.

  10. I thought Canada would get some games. Players would prefer that commute over Europe.

  11. The Vikings should get Norway, home of the Northmen.
The Pats should get England, they are literally NEW ENGLAND.
Jaguars and Panthers should get exclusive rights to Kingdoms in Africa.
The Jets should get Germany, where planes were invented.
And The Giants should get Nepal where them super tall mountains are.

    This is not complicated.

  12. How about focusing more on making the actual product better? Or at least stop making it worse.

  13. Seems odd to take Northern Ireland away from Jacksonville and give it to Pittsburgh, but then to compensate the Jags by having them share the Republic of Ireland with the Steelers. Why not just give all of the Republic of Ireland to Pittsburgh and let Jacksonville keep all of the UK?

Pretty sure Jacksonville keeps Northern Ireland since they are part of the United Kingdom. The formal name is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

  15. How about you FOCUS on AMERICA and maybe make things AFFORDABLE! It costs a weeks salary if you make basic wage to attend a game now and in some states it’s double or triple that.
