David Montgomery: Bears’ losing “sucked the fun out of the game for me”

After four seasons with the Bears, running back David Montgomery signed with the Lions this offseason. And he thinks he’s going to win a whole lot more in Detroit than he did in Chicago.

Montgomery said in a video posted by the Lions that playing for the Bears last year, when they went 3-14 and had the worst record in the NFL, was an unpleasant experience because he’s a competitor who wants to win.

“That’s all I was used to,” Montgomery said of the Bears’ losing, via NBCSportsChicago.com. “And it got to a point where it sucked the fun out of the game for me because I’m a competitor. I like to compete. That’s what football’s about. It’s so refreshing to be in a place where that’s appreciated.”

Montgomery talked about Detroit’s potential to win as one of the reasons he signed there. That hasn’t often been said about the Lions, but after they went 8-2 in their last 10 games last season, they have a lot of optimism for this season. And Montgomery is glad to be a part of it.

  1. I think the Lions SHOULD finally win the division and MAYBE win a Playoff game. Their long suffering fans deserve it, too. And on paper they look like a Franchise headed in the right direction. But anyone else think the hype for 2023 is getting a bit much, that this team has to prove it first? That the build up will be too much for a losing franchise to handle? There’s always ONE last place team from the previous season that wins their division the next. Watch the Bears, Lions fans. Hope I’m wrong for your sake. If I was a Lions fan reading Montgomery’s comments would worry me.

  2. I wish Monty the best of luck and really loved having him on the Bears. He is one of the most underrated RBs in the league with his ability to break tackles. I’ll cheer him on except when he plays us.

  3. So he joins a team that hasn’t won anything except one playoff game in 67 years.

This guy is way past his prime and wasn’t very good to begin with. He’s also made of glass which is why the Bears said bye bye.

Of course the L0Lions pick him up.

  4. Swift said the same thing. No Montgomery is on another losing team and Swift is on championship team.

  5. Probably the most ironic statement of the century coming from a guy that left the Bears for the Lions.

  6. Someone signed with the Lions because they are sick of losing? That has to sting, Bears fans.

  7. Now he is on a better team, with a better OLine and a much better chance to be a contender

  8. Most people will laugh at Montgomery for deciding to sign with the Lions to win more games…..but these are strange times. The Lions appear more talented on paper than the Bears do this season.

  9. Shhh shhhh now…it’s ok, you’re finally on a winning team. Detroit: destination. Amazingly

  10. Remember the days where people said this to get a way from the Lions? Kinda refreshing.

  11. It’s not often that we’ve heard a player wants to join the Lions because they want to win… times they are indeed A-Changin’!

  12. I never imagined I would live to hear a player say they are going to the Lions for a better chance to win but he’s not wrong

  13. When I think of winning I think of the Lions..said nobody ever..until recently. ROAR!

  14. The Lions are showing some fight, and the arrows are pointed up right now. But, the Lions are still the Lions. Better than the Bears right now? For sure. Better in the long term? Not likely. Ask Lions fans.

  15. “Sucked the fun out of the game…” Poor baby! Be grateful you get paid A LOT of money to play a kids game! It’s called A JOB!

  16. Last year and the year prior these Lions fans made fun of Monty for being hurt all the time and being awful. I can’t wait for this to backfire on the Lions. The dumb fan that changes his name every two posts will be hiding by week 6.

He’s made of glass, he’ll be injured by week 4.

The guy has missed 5 games in 4 years. Sounds like pretty thick glass to me, lol.

  18. I always didn’t think much of Monty, he’s great RB so don’t get me wrong. Maybe he will do better on the Lions because they actually have a decent OL unlike the stupid Bears that can’t seem to figure that out. I also don’t recall him being injured a lot, but he wasn’t very effective as a runner on the Bears, maybe that’s why others are warning of injury. They never saw him do anything. I like the Lions rookie RB they drafted, Monty days of shining are very limited.

Um, David you joined another losing team. Wake up dude.

The most accurate and true post out of all of them on this thread. Lions fans are goofy cl0wns that always talk a big game in May. By October there will be crickets heard on Lions post about how their season is tanking.

  20. He’s a competitor who wants to win, so he joins….the Lions??? One of the ‘losingest’ franchises in NFL history and one of the biggest jokes in the league. Nice job, David.

  21. Just add Montgomery to the list by week 4 as INJURED The dude has slowed down and started to get hurt according to sports news.

Round 1, Pick 12 — RB Jahmyr Gibbs – INJURED
Round 3, Pick 68 overall — QB Hendon Hooker – INJURED
Veteran Linemen Frank Ragnow – INJURED

Quintez Cephus WR – RELEASED (Gambling Scandal)
    C.J. Moore S – RELEASED (Gambling Scandal)

Jameson Williams WR – SUSPENSION (Gambling Scandal)
Stanley Berryhill WR – SUSPENSION (Gambling Scandal)

Campbell and Holmes doing everything they can to salvage a season…..

  22. Montgomery is past his prime, used up Bears trash. The Lions better hope this 1st rounder they risked on is a star.

  23. Tough runner. Not gonna miss him. He’s good-not-great. Solid guy, but not worth long term commitment. Monty will be a cap casualty next year.

Montgomery finally has a good OL to run behind.

    _____
I just reviewed last years Lions Bears game that Fields played in.

When Fields played the Lions last NOV he rushed for 146 yds with two rushing TDs while Monty used “not having an OL” as an excuse instead of helping his teammate. Fields also threw TD passes to Cole Kmet to help keep the Bears in the game with ZERO help from Monty. LOL

The Bears are going to sweep the Lions thus season.

    _________

In week 13 Monty sat on his hands while Fields rushed for 147 yds and 2 TDs. The Lions won that game by one point and Justin Fields got NO help from Montgomery or his WRs.

L0Lions got a real team player in Monty, HAHAHAHA

  26. Fields didn’t rush because of the great OL blocking. It is because he is a run first quarterback l. the pick six he threw in that game ignited the Lions comeback in a great road win.

Then the lions blew them out in January for the season sweep.

  27. Bears fans are whiners even packers fans say same thing lol. Gonna be really funny when they finish last in the division again!

  28. The Bears are going to sweep the Lions and this Lions cl0wn head will disappear like he always done.

You’re track record of predictions is the worst in the history of PFT.

As Viking fan I watched that game Fields played you in and threw a pick six. Fields was single handedly cutting up that shotty Detroit defense. Your overhyped Lions won the game by one point. Calm down little kitty boy.

The second game in January Fields didn’t even play and the Bears went for the 1st draft pick and laid an egg for your playoffless failed Lions.
