Derek Carr: Joining Saints has rejuvenated me

Quarterback Derek Carr once said he’d probably retire rather than play for any team other than the Raiders, but he moved in a different direction when faced with making that choice earlier this year.

Carr was released by the Raiders after the end of the 2022 season and he signed with the Saints instead of starting to make life for himself outside of football. On Tuesday, Carr said that the change in scenery has resulted in a fresh start that has reinvigorated him.

The move to New Orleans reunited him with Dennis Allen, who was his first NFL head coach and is going into his second season in that role with the Saints after many years as their defensive coordinator. Carr said that being part of the culture that Allen has helped build has been a spark for him this offseason.

“This organization, the family dynamic, the togetherness that they build every single day that you see from the top down, that’s special,” Carr said, via the team’s website. “That doesn’t just happen overnight. That’s years of work. So the foundation and the culture is already laid, I’ve just got to come in and be me. I’ve just been a fly on the wall, being encouraging and being a leader and doing those things when I need to be and saying something when I need to say something. But I’ve honestly enjoyed my time just getting to be me again. I think being in this building has rejuvenated me. It’s been a breath of fresh air for me. I never wanted to leave Las Vegas, but when I walked into this building after the last couple of months, I’m like, man, I’m glad I’m here.”

The Saints’ offense has underwhelmed the last couple of seasons and quarterback play has been at the center of their struggles. If Carr’s renewed spirit leads to renewed productivity, he won’t be the only one rejuvenated by this offseason’s change of address.

  1. Not a Raiders fan. Glad Derek Carr gets a fresh start with New Orleans.

  2. Coming from a Chiefs fan, I hope you have a good career there Carr. You deserved a lot more than the inept Raiders could offer.

  3. Joining the raiders has rejuvenated me
    – said no good quarterback in recent history

  4. Getting out of that s—t show that is the Raiders will rejuvenate almost anyone.

  5. until he gets pressured and throws an INT in the red zone to lose the game

  6. What are the odds of him being able to cross midfield vs the Saints’ defense in practice?

  7. A move to NO has reinvigorated him, but guess what didn’t: A new contract, a move to LV and a new stadium, a new HC/GM, reunited with his friend and college teammate and top 3 receiver in the NFL.
I wouldn’t expect Carr to suddenly play better for the Saints then he did last season with the Raiders.

  8. just more of the same TALK that made him an idol with some raider fans, sick of the talk and glad he’s gone but wish him well.

  9. Derek is a good qb who will always say and do the right things. Very similar to Cousins. Nice guy, good qb, but your never going to win it all with either.

  10. Why does this guy continually get so much ink? He’s not that good and is a completely emotional crybaby!

  11. We shall know when the rubber hits the road. Every team is a contender until they are punched in the mouth. Shout out to Mike Tyson.

  12. I love Carr. Elite arm talent, clutch player and a class act off the field. Hopefully the Saints can field a decent defense because that’s something Carr never had. Raiders are ranked dead last in virtually every defensive category over the last 9 years.
Carr will get the most out of the weapons they have on offense. Crabtree, Agholor, Cook and even Adams all had career years with Carr throwing them the ball. And that doesn’t include guys like Waller and Renfrow who were highly productive but never played with a different QB to compare against.
    Good luck DC.

  13. Carr a clutch player? Omg is there another universe where this guys playing? He’s never been elite or clutch. He’s been slightly above average AT TIMES. What he is, a good loser. He’ll make the same bonehead throws in NO that he did in Vegas and cost them games. I got nothing against the guy but he’ll never be mentioned with the greats, that’s just lunacy. He’s been in the league long enough to prove exactly what he is.

  14. Don’t bet on it. Carr knows all the right things to say and I truly believe he feels that way. The problem is when he gets between the lines. He makes rookie mistakes and chokes.

  15. So, he’s finally admitting that while the Raiders were paying him top dollar at the time of his contracts, he was not giving it his all anymore. Not shocked at all. C’mon Carr, go out there and break a leg.

  16. Aidan O’Connell, is the new Raiders drafted qb and he is wearing Carrs number 4. What else do O’Connell and Carr have in common. 0 NFL playoff wins, that what.

  17. Look, I got paid millions. Then I got paid even more millions but I just wasn’t feeling it.

  18. Love how some folks are saying “well he never had a defense with the Raiders”. Drew didnt have a defense for many years but he still produced at high levels on OFFENSE. Last time I checked neither guy played defense. If Drew would have had consistently great defenses, he would have won at least one maybe two more Super Bowls. Thing is if Carr throws INTs and doesn’t produce on offense who cares what the Saints defense can do. Didnt know Carr went to NOLA to count on their defense to help his mistakes. Guess that can make it better when he screws up so much.

  19. Get ready New Orleans for Derek Carr. He is a great guy and a man of faith who can really preach. But there are 4 things that he does or doesnt do that will piss you off. He doesnt like to ru, he doesnt like to get hit, throws the ball away more than anyone, and makes to many excuses. He folds like a chair and will take a sack, he will throw the ball away on 4th in the red zone, to many excuses, and he afraid of getting hit. Derek Carr is A Saint, but he is your Saint and good luck.

Or, throws it away on 4th down. Maybe he just wasn’t feeling the vibe.

  21. Arm talent, athletic, always gives hope, good talker with the media. Playoff record: 0-1. After 9 seasons: 7 seasons at .500 or less.

  22. Carr talks alot and I mean alot. His decision making process on the field is below average. The end zone is kryptonite. The following seasons will reveal the same Derek Carr. Good stats…but nothing to show for it… and no closer to a Super Bowl.

  23. Thank you danbart57 and badkarma. My thoughts exactly. I’m over the talk and the rah rah. He’s all talk. You’ll get sick of his cringy passion in his pressers. Derek is like the cringy lite version of Russell Wilson.

  24. So Melodramatic …
Don’t tell us about it (and that goes for David too) – just show us.

Carr is 13th all-time in NFL history in 4th quarter comebacks. Look it up. He’s tied with Brett Favre and ahead of Joe Montana. Virtually everyone ahead of him is either in the Hall of Fame or headed there. At his current rate of 4th quarter comeback wins he would become #1 all-time by age 37. Sorry if that’s not clutch enough for you.
Fact is Carr kept the Raiders from being a perennial 3-win team.

  26. Not a fan of Carr anymore either, glad he’s gone but he does have quite a few “clutch” 4th quarters/overtime’s under his belt.

Maybe Derek’s lack of success had more to do with Jon Gruden and Jack Del Rio as the head coaches and a LOUSY GM and owner!!! I wish you the best of luck Derek!

  28. Carr statistically has one of the worst winning percentages when the defense allows less than 20 points. So even when the Raiders defense played well, his winning % was worse than .600. Worse than JaMarcus Russell. I always get a kick out of fans of other teams blaming the defense. Like his 22ish average TDs a year really carrying this team lmao. An average at best QB.

    1. Nobody is saying Carr is Brees, who is arguably a top-10 all-time QB or close to it.

    2. Brees spent 15 seasons with the Saints. In that time:
    – 6 out of 15 seasons the Saints defense ranked lower than 20th in ppg
    – In those 6 seasons the Saints with Brees and a defense outside the top 20 the Saints record was 43-53 (44.8% winning pct)

Carr spent 9 seasons with the Raiders. In that time:
    – The Raiders defense ranked below 20th in PPG all 9 seasons.
    – In those 9 seasons with Carr as QB and a defense outside the top 20 the Raiders record was 63-79 (44.4% winning pct).

    Bottom line: Team Sport

  30. Carr never wore an armband, even as a rookie. He claimed to know the playbook front to back. That has nothing to do with coaching.

Last year he showed that he didn’t have a grasp of the offense or the playbook. But there he was in Pittsburgh. Week 16. Sixteen! Putting up 16/30 174 yards 1 TD and 3 INT’s for what was a league leading 14th interception and getting benched.

He had 4 of 15 games with multiple interceptions and two 3 interception games.

    Good luck.

  31. He’s already gotten rid of that awful stench that is Dalton.

    Good luck with that Carolina.

Half the league was on par with Carr’s 14 INTs last season. Let’s not pretend it was some major outlier or factor in the team’s overall record. This was not like Jameis throwing 30 INTs a few years ago. Dak threw more INTs in far fewer games. Mahomes and Burrow had 12 apiece. Josh Allen and Cousins also had 14. All those teams did well.
    INT % for their careers:
    – Peyton Manning: 2.7%
    – Josh Allen: 2.3%
    – Drew Brees: 2.3%
    – Joe Burrow 2.0%
    – Dak Prescott: 2.0%
    – Derek Carr: 2.0%
    – Justin Herbert: 1.8%
    – Jalen Hurts: 1.8%

The idea that Carr is some egregious pick thrower is pure fiction.

  33. McDaniels is a plain awful coach. Ego is too big for his skill set. How do you not allow your QB to check out of bad plays ?? Its Denver 2.0 in Vegas. The breath of fresh air is getting away from the McDaniels poo show, and now being around BFL caliber coaching

  34. I wish that all these player who get traded to another team and shot off their mouth about how great the new team is would just SHUT UP AND PLAY!!!

  35. The Saints’ arrow is pointed down. It will take a much better QB than Carr to change that.
