Lamar Jackson expects “less running and more throwing” in new Ravens offense

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson said on Wednesday that his plan for the rest of the offseason program is to get the team’s new offense “down pat,” but he’s already learned some key parts of what offensive coordinator Todd Monken wants to do to this year.

Jackson was asked if he believes the new offense will highlight different parts of his game than the Ravens have highlighted in the past and his response was “less running and more throwing.”

“Absolutely. Especially with the receivers we have. . . . Just being able to throw the ball down the field. Running can only take you so far,” Jackson said. “I feel like with this new era of teams and offenses in the league, I feel like we need that, and coach Todd Monken, what I’m seeing in this offense so far, it’s tremendous.”

While talking about the team’s additions on offense earlier this month, Jackson mused about throwing for 6,000 yards this season. That may not turn out to be the case, but the signs are pointing to a different approach in the first year of the quarterback’s new contract.

  1. It’s always a shock hearing that Greg Roman has a job somewhere. Him not being in Baltimore anymore has me thinking Lamar is going to have a great year

  2. If his history is any indication, he will be no more accurate in this offense than he was in the last one. So less running and more throwing is not going to equal success.

  3. so I should take over on the 3,000 passing yard wager? 5 years and counting, he passed over 3,000 once… for comparisons he passes just about as good as David Mills.

  4. Lamar is selling himself short. I see an easy 6,500 yards from him. He’s been really close a couple time with… oh – never mind.

  5. Lamar already holds the record for most passing yards by a RB.

  6. Top 10 pocket passer already with worst supporting cast in football and the 6th best offense. Now that they have upgraded to simply mediocre weapons with Good health and if the young pass rushers come through should be superbowl bound. Give the haters something real to cry and be wrong about.

  7. Never have gotten the people who hate on this guy for running what his coaches told him to run If he did like Robert Griffin and feuded with them, you would have called him a malcontent.

  8. I’d love to see Lamar Jackson pass more. He’s underrated as a passer. His elusiveness helps.

Despite having a big arm and a pretty good offensive line, his deep ball stats are at the bottom for NFL starters. He really needs to work on that if he wants to sniff 6,000 yards any time soon. Let’s see if OBJ still has it.

  9. Lamar Jackson or Justin Fields is better than Jared Goff or Derek Carr

  10. If the Ravens are actually doing this, it’s a considerable gamble. More than some may realize.

Careers of running QBs look predictable. After a short while, running QBs start getting hurt and defenses schematically solve them. It’s a downward trend from the start. Once, athleticism is compromised by injuries, the running QBs are toast (if they are still committed to being running QBs, of course). Point? These careers are very short and the window for teams to do something special is small.

The Ravens appear to be forcing the transition from rusher to passer (possibly a difficult sell during the regular season action). Cunningham, Vick, and others transitioned well into their pro careers. The question is… can Jackson make the transition? If not, they have wasted a precious year of Jackson’s career which they paid a fortune for.

  11. So more passes more incompletions. We have seen Lamar pass the ball. He’s just not consistent enough at it. Shame they had to pay him.

  12. Unfortunately, Lamar meant to say he’s throwing for 6,000 feet this season.

People say that but it’s not true. Rg3 got hurt, Colin Kaepernick got hurt then blackballed, and Vince Young had off the field issues. Other than that every other running QB Had their best seasons between 28-32 like everyone else. Add to the fact that Jackson already has a top 10 passer rating from the pocket with a very underwhelming supporting cast he will be fine.

  14. No secondary in the entire NFL is afraid of LJ’s passing game & he is way past the point of relearning how to become a more one dimensional QB.
His ingrained instincts to run first will override his need to let plays develop & he’ll end up on IR by the latter part of this coming season.

  15. Lamar running less and throwing more = Ravens winning less and losing more

  16. Trust me. All that Lamar…….that’s not by the OC ( Roman) design. That’s by your lack of ability to consistently read the field, get happy with your feet, and taking off prematurely. That ….isn’t going to change

  17. Lamar Jackson or Justin Fields is better than Jared Goff or Derek Carr

As a Lions fan, I couldn’t agree more. I watched Fields rip apart our shallow defense last season. Not looking forward to playing Fields twice this year with a much improved arsenal of weapons.

You have just confirmed what I said. Running QBs get hurt and their demise isn’t far behind. Name the running QBs, who didn’t transition to passers and primed between 28-32. Cam is the only I can come up with… he was built different and that staved off the demise longer than usual. A running QB requires 100% athleticism, losing any results in diminishing effectiveness. Lower body injuries to passers are less problematic. RG3 blows out his knee and his career is over; Burrows and Brady ascend afterwards.

Also, Kaep was benched before he was blackballed. His demise was well under way before he opted out of his contract and then was blackballed.

And I’ll be looking forward to Fields tossing another pick 6.

  21. So many Lamar Jackson haters on here you would think he is Baker Mayfield, lol. Go Ravens!

  22. Wouldn’t less predictability, run vs pass, have a negative impact on Jackson’s stats? Just asking.

  23. Looking at Baltimore’s schedule, 7-10 seems about right. It’ll be a better record than Cleveland’s but…

Lamar Jackson or Justin Fields is better than Jared Goff or Derek Carr

This comment has generated a few strong responses. At this point I’d say Jared Goff is the most reliable of the 4, everything else being equal. Justin Fields probably has the highest ceiling of the 4, this coming year should give us an idea what his ceiling actually is. Lamar is a tough one. At times last year I thought his passing game was rounding into shape, but then it would seem to fall apart. We’ll see what Lamar is this year with a new OC, new receivers and his new contract. Even if he can throw accurately I’m skeptical that he can read defenses well enough to beat the better teams. Derek Carr is a gamer but he’s 4th on this list.

  25. Jackson gets a lot of critique as a QB, but I’ve seen him throw a lot of really pretty, great passes. He has it in him. He just hasn’t reached that next level where the potential lines up with when it’s needed most. To me, the critique is more about mistakes and going quiet at the wrong times. A lot of his heroics are in digging the team out of his own mistakes. But I’ve seen him throw enough great passes to know that he can do it.

  26. I thought John was a better coach than to pay this me first premadonna. Not a ravens fan, but I miss the Ravens of old who ran the ball and played hardnosed defense. The Ravens vs Steelers rivalry was partially responsible for the success the NFL has become, but has sadly lost it’s edge because it became more about the business than the game. The fans deserve better.

  27. How many of you haters will come back to admit you were wrong if he has a good season. I suspect none.

  28. Wonder how long it will take for the Media to throw the offensive Coordinator and his teammates under the bus when Lamar has difficulties throwing on time accurate forward passes.

  29. Is it about passing yards or winning? Lamar’s won a lot of games in his 5 years.

  30. He was “top 10 in the pocket” is so funny. Because noone was afraid of him and gave him plenty cushion. Wont be that way this year.
