When Eric Bieniemy arrived in Washington this offseason as the new assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, head coach Ron Rivera said he was going to give Bieniemy significant authority to bring the success he had with the Chiefs to the Commanders. And Rivera said today that things have changed because of Bieniemy.

Rivera said Bieniemy has changed the Commanders’ Organized Team Activities because he has a different approach to how he wants players to learn the offense, and the Commanders’ defensive and special teams coaches have also gone along with how Bieniemy wants to do things.

“I gave him the opportunity to script a lot of things we’re doing, handling all the scheduling,” Rivera said. “That’s why things are different, that’s why we’re not on the field already, because of some of the things he wanted to change and wanted to work on.”

Rivera said he likes the way Bieniemy commands attention when addressing the team.

“It’s been exciting,” Rivera said. EB is a high-energy, high-impact guy. he doesn’t pull any punches, he’s very direct with the players, which is good.”

Rivera made clear that he’s giving Bieniemy more authority than most coordinators have, reflecting the additional title Bieniemy has.

“I don’t believe you give the assistant head coach title and it’s gratuitous,” Rivera said. “It’s not just a title. It’s a working title. He’s doing those things and he’s got those responsibilities, and I think he relishes it. He’s one of those guys who very few people are going to out-work.”

Bieniemy’s inability to get a head-coaching job has been an annual story in the NFL. Rivera is giving Bieniemy more authority, and perhaps an opportunity to prove that he’s ready for a head-coaching job, one that could finally come in 2024.

  1. i will believe it when i see it. right now dc is projected to have the worst qb. i want to buy in but that o-line is very sus.

  2. The last OC, Scott Turner couldn’t score 15 points a game and Rivera gave him a contract extension in the offseason. Then he fired him! Ron Rivera is the last person who should pick an OC and if no other teams that Bienemy interviewed with would hire him, it’s ridiculous to think that Rivera is the only one right about him!

  3. Seems odd they put all their eggs in the S. Howell basket after one game. Eric can build a lot of credability if this offense is above average or better. Washington always plays hard and tough. They just keep missing on the QB.

  4. EB doesn’t have Mahomes or Travis Kelce, but I do think the Redskins offense will be a lot Better with him in charge.

  5. I hope he excels and all the team owners and managers that just interviewed him to comply with the Rooney rule will look like idiots.
If it happens, I might go into the reporting journalist field of work just to report on it several times a year, haha

  6. A big impact just means different. We’ll see how it works when the season starts…

  7. Yes Ron, but how’s he going to react when you’re up 2 scores midway through the 3rd and you throw the reins on for the rest of the game (run, run, pass, punt)?

The rest of the modern world realizes that Andy Reid picked EB and was extremely influential with Rivera – who had a real, obvious need for a new, experienced offensive coordinator. There is no evasion with Bieniemy – who also operates best with all shades of grey.

Matt Nagy was clearly out of his depth on his way too early promotion to the Head Coaching ecosystem in the NFL. He had yet to cut his teeth and earn his stripes. Bieniemy is not that dude.

  9. This will be a measuring stick for how good a coordinator Beiniemy really is. If he is really as good as KC has said he’ll make something work on that horrible Offense. He needed to step away from Andy Reid’s shadow & prove himself without benefit of having a Mahomes & Kelce.

  10. Eric will probably be the coach by Halloween. Riverboat Ron is dilapidated.
