Source: Only eight of 19 supposed concussions on kickoff plays could be seen on film

The NFL’s push for further changes to the kickoff play came in large part from the fact that 19 concussions happened during kick returns in 2022. But there’s an important caveat to that.

Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, only eight of the concussions could be actually spotted with the human eye.

For the other 11, there was no evidence on film that a concussion happened during a kick return. It could have happened during the week. It could have happened at other times during the game.

None of the other 11 were reported at the time they supposedly happened. In most cases, the player who supposedly suffered a concussion during a kickoff return left the field in a way that suggested he was perfectly fine.

Some who oppose the latest change, which allows a fair catch between the goal line and the 25 to become first-and-10 possession at the 25, believe the league is deliberately fudging the numbers in order to support the change that was made. Then, next year, the numbers will be properly counted and, if/when they are lower, the league will claim that the rule change reduced concussions.

Some wonder when that will be the case. The concern is that, before the fair catch is called, there will potentially be head impacts by and among the players who are jockeying for position. Obviously, the kick coverage team can’t lollygag under the assumption of a fair catch; otherwise, they’ll potentially get burned by a return specialist who decides to take off with the ball.

So the players will have to block and try to get past blocks before the hand goes in the air for a fair catch. Even then, the players covering the kick will want to be in position to recover a muff.

These are all problems with this new rule. The biggest problem is that the factual foundation on which this current rule change was based is deeply flawed, with more than half of the 19 concussions on kickoff returns possibly not happening on kickoff returns at all.

  1. Who actually trusts the data disseminated by the NFL? It’s all biased to fit their narrative to change the rules to make more money.

  2. Or is there the possibility that there were more than 19 concussions on kickoffs? That thought wasn’t even mentioned in the article.

  3. LMAO…..oh noooooo. How else can we limit actual physical contact in tackle football.

  4. For anyone complaining about this one specific rule change, but has pushed for the other myriad changes that have occurred over the last 10 or so years….. Specifically, the sports media folks. You wanted changes to make the game safer and/or more offensive friendly. Your cries fall on deaf ears as far as I’m concerned. You contributed to this mess, live with it. Damn, I guess I am getting old…..

  5. Roger Goodell.
These rule changes are engineered by Goodell.
But the players love ❤️ him.
Look how happy they are to hug him at the draft.
Fans love him. They marvel at how much money he makes for the owners.

  6. Insinuating there was no concussion because there was no obvious signs does NOT mean it didn’t happen. Players played through them for years and were considered weak if they left the field. Any article downplaying concussions and head injuries must be stopped. Not long ago drinking water during football was considered weak. Times have changed for player safety and we ALL must embrace and emphasize player safety.

  7. They’re doing this to help the offense – yet again – so teams don’t get pinned deep in their own end. Doesn’t happen all that often but this will help fantasy stats and Vegas point spreads. I think my lawn and landscape will receive more of my attention this fall …..

  8. “The biggest problem is that the factual foundation on which this current rule change was based is deeply flawed…”

Bruh. It’s 2023. We don’t let Facts get in our way anymore.

  9. This is just a way for the NFL to increase scoring. IMO go to the way the XFL handles kickoffs.

  10. The concern is that, before the fair catch is called, there will potentially be head impacts by and among the players who are jockeying for position.

This is exactly the logical outcome. If you know a traditonal kick is guaranteed to wind up at the 25 then you’ll never kick deep. Instead it’d make sense to either squib it hoping it hits somebody and/or gets mishandled or pooch it down around the 25 hoping to encourage guys to try a return as your coverage is closing in for a big hit.

  11. Classic case of inflate the stats to support an argument for change & then the stats go down to justify what a success the change made. Bit like what the league’s doing with turf & artificial grass argument currently.

  12. Cherry-picking of data without relevant context seems to be the M.O. of the league office. No one’s forgotten how it was wielded in Deflategate, when entirely normal phenomena was presented in isolation as some kind of aberration and never followed up on.

Some rules, like defenseless receivers and dangerous tackling at the knees, make obvious sense for player safety. Others, like this one, seem more inherent. Players are pushing themselves to be stronger and faster and to make more punishing and decisive plays.

Switching to grass turf and being strict with penalties, ejections and suspensions would create a safer environment for play immediately. That they don’t do so makes changes like this both hypocritical and seemingly agreeable with “acceptable losses”.

  13. Mike, I am going to disagree here. I don’t believe there is an internal conspiracy in NFL Headquarters to remove kickoffs from the game. I totally get that the rule changes over the years suggest we are heading this way but I would need a convincing reason as to why the NFL would go through all of this lying just to decrease kickoffs. There is no money involved, which tends the be reason behind most of their decisions.

Sorry but on this one, it just doesn’t really make sense.

  14. 19 out of how many in a 17 game season is not all that bad really.

The lowest number by team per game is still over four per. Highest is almost six per game. If you use the lowest of 4.1 and do the math for all teams that is well north of 2k kickoffs 19 or 8 out of north of 2k is not bad really

  15. This could be a good opportunity for a more comprehensive philosophical discussion about what American Football is supposed to be. That could lead to one day finally fixing the rulebook of all the weak spots that lead against what the intentions of the vision are, while at the same time creating a potential interactive opportunity with the fans and league members to participate in this “philosophical-conversation-exercise”, which is good for the mind and soul anyhow. The NFL just needs to have a serious discussion about what should be in THEIR Constitution.

  16. NFL rules are being made by lawyers now. It’s about limiting liability, not improving safety and competition.

  17. It’s no long football. Effectively they’ve eliminated the play. Players had the choice to call a fair catch or not to. It was always one of the exciting plays of a game.

  18. Tua has more concussions on tape in 2022 than the entire league has for just kickoff returns.

  19. So there was an average of 1.06 concussions per week on kickoffs league wide considering 19 total in 18 weeks of play (not counting playoffs).

That is 19 concussions in 272 games (not counting playoffs) which comes down to .07 or 1 concussion per each 7 percent of games played.

Further, there were 2703 kickoffs in the regular season. Considering 19 concussions (more likely 8) on the play reduces the rate to under 1 percent (likely lower).

    Seriously ??

    DATA THIS NFL !!

  21. 19 concussions total? Are you serious? There are like 5,000 kickoffs every season. That is 1 concussion on every 270 kickoffs.

“….the human drama of athletic competition…. the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat . This is ABC’s Wide World of Sports!” It’s about Vegas and fantasy football, don’t kid yourself about player safety. Goodell wants 45-42 games to draw in the younger and international fan.

  23. lmaoo the same guy who demands grass fields based on garbage data will imply that a concussion isnt real because he cant see it on the all 22

    _____________

The subject is player safety in general, not what Goodell does or does not want. There are way too many people like wintercoates who get their thrills out of the players being mangled. The players are athletes, not gladiators.
