The Seahawks finished 26th in total defense last season, including 30th in rushing defense. It was Clint Hurtt’s first year as a defensive coordinator.

Hurtt, though, expects his unit to be much improved this season.

I’m very confident,” Hurtt said, via John Boyle of the team website. “We’re going to be better. We’re going to improve.”

Bringing back Jarran Reed and Bobby Wagner was big for the Seahawks. They also added defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones, linebacker Devin Bush and safety Julian Love in free agency.

The Seahawks have not ranked in the top 10 in points allowed or yards allowed since 2016.

“I’m not going to get into all the stuff and say we’re going to do this do that,” Hurtt said. “I don’t get into all those things; the proof is in the pudding, and we’ll show that during the course of the year as we continue to progress. But I’m excited and appreciative about what John [Schneider] and Pete [Carroll] have put out here with us to work with. We’re a developmental staff, so we’ve got to get these guys up to speed and everything is going in the right direction right now.”

  1. We gotta work on that D-Line. We have some young pass rushers, Nwossu, and Jones in the middle. If Jones were to go down, and he hasn’t even played a snap for us, our D, especially our run D would be in shambles.

  2. I believe it will be better. How much better though? I guess we’ll find out.

  3. Nothing instills more confidence in me than a grown man saying “The proof is in the pudding”.

  4. Seattle’s defensive line had a ton of trouble pushing the line of scrimmage back…and often times offensive lineman would get the opportunity to block Seattle’s linebackers…the Seahawks MUST do better on defense next year….

  5. Addition by subtraction. Cody Barton was an overpaid blocking dummy for every opposing o line. Can’t believe anyone paid him a dim in free agency. Before you thumbs down me, watch any 10 defensive plays from the season. He’s fully blocked out in 9 of the 10. Bobby back in the middle, bush on strong side, brooks weak side, we got this. And don’t be surprised to see #33 sniffing out the run at a new position this year for the 7 games he’ll be healthy for.

Did you not watch Wagner the year before? It was the exact same. It’s part of the d-line’s job to keep the o-line off the linebackers. They’ve been horrendous at it the past few years. The Seahawks didn’t do nearly enough on the D-line to expect much better this year.
